Going From Flab to FAB!
Im currently doing ww and am thinking long term and i know im gonna need a TT .. a bit of background .. Im 32 ive had 4 children 2 close together and my last one was 9lb 8 .. My starting weight at diet was 14stone 8lbs and my BMI 36 im now down to 13stone 4 lbs and BMI 33 I want to get to 10 stone. I already have a saggy tum and a long bit that hangs over my knicker line so definatly want to get it sorted.

I was just wondering (and im sorry if im asking to much) But how long did it take to save for the surgery?
Im just trying to work out how much to save when to start the ball rolling as in seeing somone? or do i see my GP first?

I live in Lymington Hampshire and would love some recomendations i can save for when the time comes

Sorry if im being to nosey and feel free to ignore me hehe ...

Ive just found this bit of the site and am slowly reading my way through it! You are all such an inspiration xx

You will be able to get it done on the NHS when you are at your target weiht but if you would rather go private I think it's about 2 - 2.5 grand. Be prepared to travel for the best surgeon if you go private. It wouldn't hurt to start looking around now so you know what you will be looking at. Good luck with it x

Hi Taz ...
how come you think id be able to get it done on NHS ?? so many people on here seem to have been turned down? Obviosuly if i could get it done on the NHS that would be great as then i could save for a boob lift .. Thanks for answering me xx

A friend of mine had a belly curtain after losing loads of weight and she was able to get it done on the NHS as it was not a cosmetic complaint. It may be a postcode lottery type thing but I know they will do it if it's because of weight loss

I would see your gp first and see if it is possible on the NHS. I t defiantely is a lottery situation, but you never know you may be one of the lucky ones. Privately your looking at around 5k.

So would it be a good idea to go see my GP before i get to my goal weight then? or wait until i get there ?
Thanks for all your help

I live in Portsmouth, Hants and my GP told me I didnt have a hope in hell of getting one done on the nhs, even if I maintaned weight loss........

Hi, Just thought I would tell you of my experience. I visited the doc last Feb, weighing 12st 9Ib, I needed to lose 3st and was going on the VLCD. I asked him if he would refer me for a Tummy Tuck. He told me when I was down to my weight he would. The upshot was I lost the weight by the end of June, was referred to the Surgeon, went to see him in August and he said he would do the tuck on the national health, the op was performed in November. It was the best thing I have ever had done, just a shame I couldnt have had it done years ago, as I always had a very bad overhang, that has affected my life in so many ways. Since November I have made a fantastic recovery, feel wonderful and am constantly watching my weight. I have been on hols so put on about 10Ib, and am therefore back on SS for a few weeks to get my weight back down.

wow blossom thats wonderful! .. Do you think it is down to postcode as in where theres more money? .. i live in quite an afflluent area (sp) .. and i know for sure that if i was still in cornwall they would definatly say no because theres no money there and its classed as a deprived area,

whats your thoughts?

Hi, I dont know if its down to postcode, or if the surgeon has a particular criteria that has to be met. I do know I was very, very lucky but my advise to anybody for what its worth is keep trying different health regions, as I have been told you may get refused in one area but accepted in another. reply

Hiya, pixie.

I live in Coventry, and, although my GP referred me to a surgeon, and the surgeon recommended me for a tt (as an 'ideal candidate'), the pct turned me down for funding. I've lost six and a half stone, and have a pretty bad, wrinkly apron, but the pct said they weren't currently funding 'cosmetic' ops - personally, I don't consider it as cosmetic, but hey-ho!

I've been looking into private surgery at the start of the summer hols (i'm a teacher, so that'd be best for recovery time), and the cost will be around £4,500 - £5,000. Private healthcare hospitals seem to be slightly more competitive in price than specialist cosmetic groups, such as Transform. If you're willing to go abroad (which i'm not brave enough to do!), you can cut that cost by half in some countries.

Hope that helps. It's certainly worth trying the NHS route first, but don't be too reliant on the outcome.

also ask your doctor for the criteria in your area, in my area the surgeons criteria for funding is maintaining your weight for 2 years and being under a bmi of 25 and having a bmi of over 35 to start with. Also it cant be done purely for cosmetic reasons it has to be a medical problems such as sore skin underneath, depressing you, phycological reasons more than cosmetic.
At the minute i am in the process of seeing if i can get funding for this procedure but am waiting, the doctor has agreed and i am meeting criteria its all down to the surgeon and primary care trust to agree funding.

I'm also waiting to hear if I can get funding from my pct, my GP said they judge each case on it's own merits so I just hope my case is good enough.

It's really quite unfair, isn't it? My BMI was 41 before I began losing weight, and it's now in the 'healthy' range. I'd maintained my weight for two years when I saw the surgeon, and he thought I was ideal both physically (fairly young, strong stomach muscles apparently (!), a sizeable amount of skin, etc) and mentally (affecting me on an emotional level). Yet, the pct had a blanket ban on any of this kind of funding at the time, apparently. It's quite annoying that i'd fulfil all the criteria elsewhere, and would get the funding. We all pay our tax and NI contributions into the same National Health Service, don't we?!

It is unfair but each health care trust decides on their own area, the same way its a lottery with different kinds of medications and ivf.
