Evening,

I'm booked in with a surgeon early next year for a gastric sleeve and am after a bit of advice about the recovery? I'm really worried about vomiting etc and the loss of hair that they've mentioned?
I'm paying private at Spire Hospital in Manchester.

Thanks

KT

Hello and welcome!

I had a sleeve in September and so far no vomiting and no hair loss.

They have to warn you of the possibilities but as long as you take your vitamins and eat slowly and don't over do it...... :D

Recovery time is tricky to advise though, I was reluctantly back at work after two weeks but everyone is different. So its really important that you go at your own pace!

I too had a sleeve in September and have had no vomiting and no hair loss, just a bit out of condition so changed shampoo and all fine now. I started short drives after two weeks. Didn't feel up to it before and then it was still a bit sore when I turned the steering wheel. Main problem was constipation and lack of energy, particularly whilst on stage one fluids. My advice is don't overdo it too early... Although it is keyhole, unlike other keyhole surgery as opposed to full cut surgery which takes longer to recover from, and both where you are eating normally afterwards, your body is adjusting to a whole new nutritional lifestyle. Everyone is different though depending on many factors so would suggest you read through people's diaries. There is also a lot of interesting and helpful info in the September and November 2016 threads as it seems a lot of us had sleeves then.

All daaayyyyy Thursday waiting to be called through.....

Op was thursday afternoon but had to be there early morning, home Saturday afternoon.

Don't get me wrong, I haven't had an easy journey but no, I don't have any regrets :)

Thanks for all the advice, I'll read through the diaries! I'm really looking forward to the results, but apprehensive about the operation. This is just the start of my journey and hoping for great things to come!

I had the sleeve in April and had a few complications in the few weeks following so I was back to work after 6 weeks. Hair loss usually crops up around 4 months post op. Luckily my hair was quite thick but it's noticeably thinner now you wouldn't know really it's mainly me that can tell the difference. Boyfriend did complain about finding hair everywhere for weeks though:rolleyes:

I was in hospital for two nights x

Who is doing your sleeve?
I was sleeved 5 weeks ago but at the Alex in Manchester. No regrets. My recovery was very quick really. Probably did too much too soon but felt ok. Drove after 8 days and back at work after 9.

Mr Alan Li is doing mine at Spire in Manchester. It's so hard to choose a surgeon, I have my first appointment with him on Jan 3rd then hope to get the sleeve booked in for a couple of weeks later. It's so good to hear that your recovery was quick as I'm hoping to only take 2wks off work, but I know everyone is different.

How did you choose your surgeon?

@Nervous.com Mr Li did mine. He's lovely! I had it done at the Alex though as it's 2k cheaper there and after care package is the same.

I had three weeks off then three weeks restricted which meant I was in the office. You will be very tired.
Hair loss starts 3-4 months out and lasts several months, I list loads but I've got a lions mane so it wasn't noticeable. Good luck with your sleeve.

Ah that's good to hear, I did a bit of research into the different surgeons and he seemed really well experienced. Really looking forward to getting date put in now!

Can you take anything to help with the tiredness? Take caffeine etc?

I was sleeved in May and took 4 weeks off. I was in hospital for 2 nights and had a couple of issues in the first 24 hours but I have a complex medical conditions so it was likely to be that. I was very tired for a while but by the time I went back to work I was used to the puree stage I was on and tolerating a good amount of water each day.

I have lost quite a lot of hair but I knew that was likely to happen. I take a supplement, use thinning hair shampoo and had it cut shorter in the summer. I am so pleased with the overall results that it doesn't worry me plus hitting a decent amount of protein daily made a difference.

Only you can decide if it's the right decision to make. WLS is certainly not the easy cheat some people think it is but it is a good tool and if you work with it you can get the results you want. It's a big commitment and certainly life changing as you'll see reading the diaries. Good luck :)

@Nervous.com yes I found him excellent so far. Gives out his personal mobile and happy to book in extra follow up appointments if needed.

Ah thanks for your advice...I only worry about the hair loss because I'm getting married in Sept '17 and really want to look my best. It's taken me ages to decide upon the surgery route, but I feel it's the right route for me. I want to finally put my weight issues to rest and live my life without my life revolving around when I get to eat next. I need to draw a final line under yoyo dieting and being obsessed with what I weigh. I know it's going to be a tough 12-18months but I'm ready for it and up for the challenge!
