i had my bypass a week ago at luton with mr whitelaw, i was only down for 1hour 50mins and it was a txt book operation. i had no pain whatsoever and was sent home after a day and a half to recuperate.
now perhaps i should know more than i do but could someone tell me if its normal to get dumping syndrom after the protein drink i thought i was going to die and now if i have anything other than liquid such as mushy weetabix or flat dr pepper zero i feel ill again
what i need to know is will this improve and should i persevere with some textured food as i cant drink the protein drink and im keen to get some protein in me ?
in fact im nervous when ever i induce anything now and im hoping that i can get some tolerance to this dumping syndrome!
if it gos on like this ill never be able to enjoy a drink in a pub again !
i know its only been 8 days and perhaps ive had an easy ride but can anyone reassure me that normality of a sort is there in the future ?

Hi Paul sorry I can not help not dumped yet but someone will be a long to answer you

WELCOME TO MINIS

ok dumping can happen for a number of reasons, sugar content, fat content or just too much swallowed if there is no sugar or fat content then it could simply be your pouch is already full

Ensure you do not drink for at least 20 mins prior to eating anything, do not drink with meals or for up to an hour afterwards this all helps the nutritian stay in your pounch and digest rather then get washed through.

Its natural to feel nervous about trying new things, do one new thing/taste at a time, this way you know whether you are able to handle it...

hope this helps

if you can drink really thin soup (normally one with all the lumps strained out) you could add some grated cheese to it for aome extra protein.

Hi paul shud u not just be on liquids for at least another week..perhaps u are trying to rush your food intake..im 2 wks post op and just introducing pureed food and weetabix....hope u get sorted

Hi Paul
I might be able to help or suggest things but first need to understand a bit more about whats happening to you.

Ok firstly were you told to follow a liquid only diet for at least 2 weeks (this means thin soups and liquids only, with no lumps or tiny bits)

Secondly - are you actually dumping, if you are the symptoms should be something like, servere sweating, dizzyness, increased heart rate, lethargy and the need to lay down !
if on the other hand your getting a horrible tight chest feeling after eating something that kind of feels like you have got a brick lodged in your chest, then your not dumping but over pushing your pouch !

I've never had protein drinks and really dont believe in them, i think your cutting corners and not following the liquid stage part, 1 week post op you shouldn't be eating weetabix ! liquids only, you need to give your pouch and intestines time to heal ! drink plenty or water, at 2 weeks plus then you can start to slowly introduce very slushy foods like weetabix etc ! Dont worry about how much your eating or protein, your bodies got 20 million calories stored so should be ok living on itself for a while.

This is just my opinion though based on what you've said here, so i may be wrong, if the problems persist i'd speak to your consultant.

Let me know and i hope things get better for you !
