To all the bypassers out there, I have been told today that I am a bit too young for the bypass? I'm 28, is there anyone else out there who got it done around that age? That was the first time I've been told that- I will not enclose which healthcare company that said this to me but I've never heard this before!

I was told that because of the bypass you are not getting the nutrition that you need (even with the supplements) and long term (30 years down the road) this could really affect me.

When I saw my surgeon he did ask why not the band. He didn't question me any further, and was happy to go ahead with the bypass. he did mention at the very end that I'm not the youngest he's done this operation on, Which makes me think that some surgeons may have a lower age limit. But I'm booked in for it 2 weeks today, and I'm 24. So would definitely be worth trying other surgeons for advise :)

I can't say I've come across that argument before. malabsorption is a risk not a given and most people with deficiencies can be managed well with treatment.
I am now 16 months post op and around the year mark developed low vitamin d, zink and b12 but after treatment my bloody are now back to normal. I would be more worried about the long term effect of obesity on my health x

Sounds like rubbish to me! I was 30 when I had the bypass, I know 3 people (and there are many more on here) who had it and were under the age of 25. My surgeon argued for the idea that the younger the better (as in not putting it off), because the healing process may be considerably quicker, and the mind and body will adapt more readily.

Thank you everyone, you have put my mind at rest about that, I was questioning the bypass for a minute there!

I started my journey when I was 28 had the op when I was 29. Best choice ever

Have they suggested an alternative such as the sleeve?

We are all aware of the risks when we go into this but there must be some sound reasoning behind why they have said this.

health care company? are you american? i know it can be a struggle to get them to pay out, an american friend of mine had trouble getting them to agree because she was 30 and didnt have co morbitiys (yet) eventually they agreed to the sleeve

im 31 and my age wasnt brought into it at all, the surgeons registrar suggested bypass because of my sweet tooth

I'm 34, I did consider if it may effect me in 20-30 years, but at the end of the day if I did nothing I probably wouldn't be here then anyway ( sorry a bit morbid). But my age was never questioned (I went private for my sleeve)
Perhaps speak to another company?

No not American, I live in Dublin and I was speaking to a British company regarding the surgery! I just thought it was odd that they said that at my age they wouldn't suggest a bypass but I have already discussed this with my surgeon-I was just checking out other companies to see how competitive the price was!

sorry i had just come back on to say i realise now you meant private surgery group, got brain fog today ignore me

it is rather bizare that they would say that to you as most suggest procedures based on your eating habits, bmi and how long youve been overweight

Strange, I'm 29 and have been trying for 5 years. I am now making progress and hopefully soon will have my date. My age has never been mentioned by any specialist I've ever met.

Never heard age being a concern before by providers. Mine certainly never mentioned it. Had mine at 31. Yes there are risks but I think your body has a better chance of adapting and recovering the younger you are.
