HI, I'm two weeks post op today - I've just started pureed stage and made a smoothie with 75g of frozen strawberries, a whole banana and 150ml of goats milk.

I've just read that bananas are likely culprits to make you dump - how long will it take if I'm going to? I'm having a nervous breakdown right now worrying myself silly!

Thanks

I dumped for the first time about 5 days post op. On a cuppa soup of all things.

People can dump on the simplest thing.
There is no knowing what you will dump on .That's if you dump.
I have never had a problem with bananas but dumped on pineapple.
I have dumped on diabetic ice-cream but could eat full fat Cornish ice-cream.
I have also eat a full Mars bar but dump on cupcakes
Our bodies are strange things
HTH

I am 6 weeks post op and havent dumped on anything yet hun x

Thanks ladies, lamornamiss, how quickly after eating do you dump and what exactly happens if you don't mind me asking?

Dumping can happen within minutes or anything up to 3 or more hours later, there's no rhyme or reason to it sadly, just how our bodies react to a given food on a given day that may be totally different the next day or next time you try that food or combination of foods.

I dumped on soup and it really put me off, I also had a bad experience with a banana the first time i had one, they are now ok. I have had early and late dumping, early when it happens virtually straight away, shivers hot cold, palpitations. late when I have had dreadful stomach pains and explosive squits :(

I try to be very careful!!!

I dumped on milky coffee on day 1, I'm ok with it now as long as its not first thing in the morning. The smell of McDonalds made me dump as well! There is no rhyme or reason to dumping as far as I can tell, I'm now 12 weeks out and am still scared to try new things when I'm out.

I, very luckily, haven't dumped yet but I'm only 4 and half months out so I know that is no guarantee I won't. I am very careful and limit myself on how much sugar I have per 100grams of food to 5g around 99.9% of the time but even then I know it can just happen sometimes to some people and that just isn't possible if you want to eat fruit as most portions have around 11g in them. I've had one small piece of chocolate once that had 9g of sugar in it and didn't dump and I made a low fat curry that had 8g's of sugar in it and didn't dump but again no guarantee it won't happen in the future. All we can do is be as careful as possible and hope for the best. The thing is, even if it happens, it's going to be very unpleasant but it will end and it isn't going to do any lasting damage apart from maybe put us off the food we ate that caused it to happen. Good luck x

Hi Lyzyyanne, thanks for the info on dumping. I have been worrying about what it is what causes it, symptoms etc. It sounds scary, I will have to be very very careful lol.

I think that's the plan just try and be careful, I have only had it a couple of times in 4 months, during the day I only eat safe things, don't want anything to happen at work!!

Well I had it last night and thought I was going to die. I had half a pack of no added sugar angel delight - mistake! I had heart palpitations, faintness, dizzyness and generally felt terrible it happened at about 9pm (20 minutes after eating) and I had to literally crawl into bed until this morning.

When looking at a packet - which bit is sugar is it carbs or carbs which are sugar that I need to keep below 5g per 100g?

Also, any idea what to look for as far as fat contents is concerned?

Thanks

Some (not all) providers recommend less than 5g sugar per 100. Others say this limits your variety of foods too much and 10g per 100 is a better limit. My provider doesn't say anything of the sort and just healthy balanced diet without any counting.

Anything fat or sugar on the green range of the traffic light system is perfect post op 3G per 100g of fat & 5g per 100g of sugar gives us a great chance of weight loss the amber range won't stop us losing weight if we don't dump but our losses will be slower the ones to avoid like the plague are those in the red zone. The odd slip won't kill us at the worst may cause a dump but should be avoided as much as possible with the amber range a close second to avoid but not as bad as the red range foods sugar & fat content.

I usually dump within 1/2 hour after. Hot, sweaty, nauseous ,and disorientated. (The disorientation feels like I am looking in through a window and everything I do is in slow motion. It's very hard to explain) then all I want to do is sleep

I dump on sugar free Angel delight and have now given up trying.

I am 2 1/2 weeks post op and dumped on slimfast, and on one scrambled egg. I'm fine with bananas. And I still have 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in my peppermint and normal tea with no problem. At the moment I am on purée still so not worrying about the calorie content of the sugar, I can only drink about 3 mugs a day anyway. My reaction to the slimfast was to feel very nauseous, sweaty, crampy and then I basically fell asleep for 2 ours, having had a really good sleep the night before.

I dumped on Complan Strawberry and Build up Soup, even when i drank them slow as anything. As some others have said , our bodies all react differently
