Anti-coagulants

I had my bypass two weeks ago today. I didn't have the sexy compression socks etc but I have been on Fragmin (the new alternative to Heprin) ever since and I've still got another 8 injections to go. Has anyone else had this? I didn't think I'd still need blood thinning drugs this far out from my op. I'm up and walking about and quite active.

Can only say what I've been told for mine next week: injections whilst at hospital and 2 week supply to bring home.

As you say it is probably each surgeon decision. Might also be related with one's personal health situation.

Good luck on your post op :)

I was doing ok with the injections untill Friday when I had a huge panic attack when mum was about to inject me. I haven't had any over the weekend but I managed to get some local anasthetic cream today so it was easier to have my injection today.

Yes I am black and blue and still bruised from the operation as well! lol

I had the Heprin injections for a week post op which i had to administer myself, despite the fact i'm needle fobic i found the experience of self injecting quite good (in a macabre kind of way) ;-) and strangely now i dont have such a fear of needles as i did, even watched the nurse stab the needle in my arm when i had my last blood test, fascinated by the sensation as the skin broke and needle went in.

Oh my God - sound like i've got a needle fetish now lol ;-)

Congratulations on the op Jaxx - I hope you're recovering well. Just noticed your post and wondered if this is something that everyone has to have? My op is on 26th March and pre-op 22nd of this month so I really don't know anything about this kind of stuff.

Yes I think everyone has had them. They seem to be something now that comes out as standard on a range of surgeries as we are always being asked to do them for patients

Hi, i have to take them upto 21 days post op, dont even feel them most days, just leaves slight bruising after a day or so on each one

Hi Jaxx

it is mostly standard to have the blood thinners for your duration in hospital and then a further 2 weeks self administered (or in my case my oh done it for me). This is because one of the major complications of most types of surgery not just wls is clots.

It's better to be safe than sorry :)

So it's needles and stockings for your secret pleasures Silver surfer.!! Handy that they go together if you get a run in your nylons or hit a vein with your needle and need a tourniquet I suppose!!!
