Any banders with a sweet tooth?

people with a sweet tooth should deffinatly not be banded in my opinion, banders with a sweet tooth tend to have little slow or no weight loss at all unless 100% will power is put into place with sweet foods x

I do OK really. I work a small sweet item into my daily calorie allowance and once a week have what I fancy.
I have lost over 9 stone so far so it has not ruined my progress.
I do recommend planning your meals and trying to follow a correct calorie allowance but I have learnt to have sweet stuff in moderation and it's fine.
It's just a bit of effort daily to watch what you are doing and take responisbility for your food choices.
The band doesn't allow you to go on auto pilot but I am happy with mine despite my sweet tooth.
I have got self control under my own steam so I am proud of that.

Thanks, I believe it wouldn't be a problem for either. This is too important to me. I'm working on breaking my carb addiction now.

I have'nt got a sweet tooth so to speak but if I do fancy chocolate. I will have a bite size mars bar . I freeze them to make them last longer too. I know I could live without it if I had to but I think when you fancy something its better to have a little than stuff out cos you're craving if you know what I mean

I had my bypass almost a year ago and I miss sweet stuff every single day!!!

If it wasn't for me now being unable to eat sugar, there is no way I would have ever lost over 9st.

Although I am still in mourning for sugar, it's the best decision I ever made to have the bypass.

I think if you CAN'T have a bypass, due to finance issues...eg for Kaekaysmom...because your insurance won't finance a bypass and there is no NHS obviously...then if you go into the band fully aware that you must have self control and be as strict as you would be on conventional dieting... then it is possible.
Overall if you stick to a good healthy diet and have that one day a week to have your choccy / ice cream etc and leave it as a treat rather than a main part of your intake, then of course it's do-able.
Sticking to a calorie controlled diet of your choice is far far easier with a band, even without sweet spot restriction.
You have to accept the consequences of eating too much sugar and deal with it.

I have found Atkins bars good for sweet hits as they are very dense and don't have any sugar so no further cravings. Plus a good amount of protein and they are satifying.

Also I have a calorie counted dessert like a weight watchers pud and it's absolutely fine.

As you lose weight, the food becomes less important as the focus of your life anyway.

People who have a band and don't TRY to change their eating habits and be sensible about having things in moderation are of course going to have trouble.
Your attitude to it is important..if you feel like the band (or bypass ) is going to automatically do all the work for you then long term you will not keep the weight off.
If you have the attitude that you are going to change your relationship with food and start having the larger percentage of healthy food and the odd treat now and then, that is going to help you on your way.
Normal natural slim people generally have 80% of foods light and healthy and 20% fun foods....it's being normal around food that we are learning.

If you have not been given a choice or if having a bypass is just not offered or possible, or you already have a band with a sweet tooth...you can do it.
It's not impossible if you are willing to learn and it can be very disheartening to be told you are not going to succeed.
You can relearn your eating habits, anyone can....don't write yourself off because you are told you aren't suitable.
If you have a band , however it came about, and you have no choice but to make it work...then you CAN make it work if you put in that effort daily and have some faith in your own abilities.
Not easy in view of the general mood towards banding on this site but it is possible.
Keep trying and don't feel you are never going to get there.

Neen, I don't often contribute to this site, but do read posts every few days when I get the chance. I struggle with my band in that weight loss is very slow. However when I read your posts it gives me such encouragement as you are doing fantastically well and have a great attitude to the whole process.

You are one of the people I always look forward to reading.

Sorry for hijacking this thread. Just wanted to give credit where its due.

Good luck to all.

Hi love, I wish you would come chat to us on the we can do it thread. A few of us are there now on a daily basis and we are trying to keep each other going and stop the feeling of struggling alone and being scared to say so.
You have your band and regret and hindsight are not going to get your weight off, but getting organised, finding a diet/food plan that you can realistically consistantly do on a daily basis , that is what will help.
If you want any help with anything like that please let me know in pm or on that thread and join in with the rest of us.
Tell me what you are having problems with and between us, we can sort out a plan and keep tweaking it till we get some weight moving off you again.

I dont have a sweet tooth never have, my treat as ppl put it LoL I make a Jelly up once set I use about 200 mils of skimmed milk and half the jelly , put it in a whisk, and it goes into like a blamange, it is virtually fat free and taste very yummy ( you can use any jelly but I find the berries ones, strawberry , raspberry , blackberry etc work better for my tastes) a friend gave me this idea when I was due to do my pre op diet.......I am actually sitting here drinking one now for breakfast,(as my band is tighter earlier in the day ) they are really quiet yummy :)

i never used to have much of a sweet tooth, its always been large portions & carbs for me. but i have found since the band, i tend to crave chocolate a lot.
I went the first 10 or so weeks, keeping the craving at bay, having options hot chocolates, but the past few weeks I have cheated a bit & been picking at things I know I shouldn't...resulting in a huge slow down in my weight loss.
I will get back on track & stay focused though.
i keep telling myself, if i could be perfect, id not have needed to bother with wls in the first place.

I spoke to the dietician about it, and she said once I'm a few month on the band eating a dark chocolate piece of candy is ok every now and then. But she told me to remember this is a lifestyle change and Id need to find a substitute and train my mind to eat healthy when I want to eat bad. Thank God my doctor provides all his patients with continued mental support.

I think what I would consider a success for me personally is to get to a point where I can "take or leave" sugar and not have it as something I focus on. If I want it I will have it and enjoy it in a moderate amount once in a while...and the majority of my intake is healthy , light and nutrient dense...and that sugar or food in general is not what I turn to to distract me from feeling bad or uncomfortable.
I feel like I am definately getting to that point now and I can still enjoy my weekly bit of chocolate or cake and then get on with my life without it revolving around those old sweet cravings.

I`ve always had a sweet tooth since a child, the one thing that I could never knock on the head, no matter how hard I tried.
But knowing I was going for the band I had to take on board that if this was going to work, I would need to change my eating habits big style.
Before I went on the pre-op diet, I decided to do a pre - pre op diet for 6 weeks, cutting out all the sweets and chocolates as well as bags of crisps I used to buy, and although difficult to `break` my bad habits, I`m glad I did it as it was easier to cope with the milk diet.

Now like Neen I have an Atkins bar once or twice a week, or sometimes a yogurt with half a banana chopped in, or even a sugar free jelly hits the spot.

But I hav`nt craved sweets like I used to, and I think I have become better tempered because of it.

If we want our band to work it takes a lot of self control about healthy eating as well as portion sizes, and at the moment, I feel I am winning. Long may it continue!

Best wishes Kat x
