Any bandsters who wish they'd had a bypass instead?

Are there any of you bandsters out there, who wish you'd had a gastric bypass instead?

its about making the correct choices and this is why we all must be true to our selves about our lifestyles so the correct op can be chosen for the indiviauals eating habbits, wls is a last chance salloon for most of us so making the right choice is very important.

I had a band due mainly to financial reasons but a big part of my choice was to do with the fear of being away from the kids too long and malabsorbtion etc. At the time it seemed the better option for me. Looking at my eating habits and my starting weight a bypass would certainly have made weight loss easier.
I have only had restriction very recently and felt I was struggling for too long without enough help from the band , if you see what I mean.
However, what's done is done and I have made it work for me as best as I can and I will still continue to make the best of what I have now. It has forced me to be more responsible with food and exercise and learn to manage my emotional eating and take the consequences for eating silly stuff. In the end , it's OK. I could not afford to have it amended anyway and my doc did not help me at all with funding or anything. Now more people are being approved and able to get exactly the op they need and that's great.
I will get there slower with a band and it is just as much work as any diet pre surgery sometimes, but the main thing I know is I will get there through my hard work and determination, the band is just a small part of the whole effort. No regrets!!!
Good luck with your journey x

I originally had my heart set on the band, but like Liz says, I had to be true to myself and my eating habits and that determined what surgery was best for me. I did nearly make my choice purely based on the price of the 2 procedures!

I'm glad I had a bypass, as it seems to be a breeze at the moment, and I don't like the idea of a band now, I think I would have struggled with it.

No, I made the right choice for me and my eating habbits :D:D

Short and sweet I know lol x

with my eating habbits and with a starting weight of 25st i know why the dr wanted me to have bypass, but i didnt want that op so had band and have done well with it, i had a wobble a few weeks ago and its still not completly over and i know if id had bypass id probably not be having the fight to stop bad habbits but its also made me face up to why im doing it and i have relised the reason for it and im pretty much back on track i never regret my choice , all i say with band is you need more patience and if your eating habbits are more suited to bypass you need some inner strength but i dont believe in regrets they serve no purpose , if i turned clock back knowing all i know now from when i had op i wouldnt have changed i love my band

The only time I wish i'd had a bypass is when the weight loss is slow or I plateau. Also the cost factor. And the pregnancy factor. Its different for everybody. :)

I had the band. My first choice. I was told the weight loss would be quicker to start with with a bypass but over 5 years the weight lose would be the same. That was good enough for me as the band can b reversed easier than a bypass.

As it happens my weight loss has been just a good (if not better in some cases) as it would have been had I had a bypass.

So as you can imagine I have no regrets and still believe the band it the best choice for me.

I have a band & have no regerts......It really is my best friend,

Sometime i question why I have gone for a band, but I have to look at all the realities of my lifestyle. I was completely honest with the dietician and at my age I thought a bypass was to drastic and "irrversible".

I do look at he rapid lost of bypassers and think wow I need that , but a band is better for me because of how I eat and what I eat.

If you get a band you can get a bypass at a later date but im not sure its that easy the other way round

Can you tell me more about the pregnancy issue?

Hello, I dont really know too much about it and im sure someone will be along to either correct me or add to what i've said, but the nature of the band is that it can be loosened off completely during pregnancy to allow some extra food to be eaten. Then tightened when post baby weight needs to go.
As I am 22 I think this was something to think about as I get older. The last thing I want at the min is to get preggo but who knows in a few years time.
I think they recommend leaving an amount of time between getting the band and getting pregnant (i think different hospitals say different time frames) so that existing food issues dont rear their ugly heads and weight goes back on etc.
I also believe that some WLS providers include a pregnancy care package with specialists. Mine doesnt but when my aftercare runs out something to think about.
Of course, people with bypasses can and have gone on to have successful pregnancies.
I think if I were older and had had my family and had more co-morbs I would have definitely gone for bypass.

I too was told that over the years the weight loss would be the same as a bypass. I sometimes wish the weight would move quicker but I'm happy with how it is now. My choice for band was because of my eating habbits and the fear of the surgeon moving parts around in my tum (I'm a chicken). I have no regrets at allxxx
