I'm looking for some advice about cameras please?

I've been umming & aaahhing about getting a DSLR but the prices are just way out of my league... I'm looking at around the £300 or cheaper preferably & wondered if anyone could recommend anything?

I'm also quite tempted by the fuji fine pix s1800 which isn't a dslr but has fab reviews!

I have a very well loved canon t70 that I've had since college but I want to get back into photography again so need a basic entry level camera..

Many thanks. xx

Hi Linzi... yes, I'm a photographer and am happy to help you decide what camera is right for you... but am about to go away for 2 weeks. Are you OK to wait till I get back ?

Hi Rose

That would be amazing... I'm happy to wait, its for my birthday present so I want to get it right as others are contributing!

Thanks you & have a fabulous holiday. xx

My OH is into his cameras and photography..he has had numerous cameras including,,mainly an S.L.R then he moved into digital cameras 10 years ago....(he telling me type this.. he he.. I think he wants credentials !)
It really depends what you want the camera for ...
But the nearest things to the DSLRs are the super zooms.

Tim has used mainly Nikon's and swears by them..
Heres a quick link but search for the cheapest online.

Nikon P100 Digital Camera - Black 3 inch LCD: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

We had a coolpix 5700 before but it recently broke after a good few years of abuse..lol

Tim is fussy and did his O.C.D thing in his research for the new contender, and he finally plumped for the newly released coolpix p100..

It was an unbiased purchase as money is an issue and he though maybe the lumix ranges where good but for the £300 range the coolpix has massive zoom and full 1080p video...

He does go on to say was going to spend £600 on a DSLR but after finding, testing and reviewing the coolpix, decided he would try this and so far its been a great camera
(the super zoom is the way to go if you cant afford the full DSLR kit.)

It does have a cool pull out screen.Very simple to operate.

For recommendation for purchase I would suggest that you find the cheapest UK sourced camera and ring up the manager of your local Jessops store and ask if they will price match...(makes it easier if any problems crop up)

The reason they price match is so they can get your business obviously but be warned they will recommend you buy their camera insurance(that's where they can recover there loss on the price match!)
We never have the insurance,we risk it!!
They usually have 1/2 years warranty.(it personal choice I guess but to be taken into account )
We have done price matches this way a few times(on camera purchases) and Jessops matched this p100 and we got it for £280 (in may 2010)..leaving £20 for the new case lol..

Hope this of some help..good luck in your search...let me know what you get..;-)

It depends entirely on what you want to use the camera for - and what's perfect for one person won't necessarily suit someone else. So with respect to Tim's advice, which is pretty spot-on, I wouldn't recommend you a specific camera until I know what you want to do with it.

BTW, I'm a Canon girl myself... Nikon is a dirty word in our house ! :8855::8855:

Def Canon or Lumix. We both have a Canon 350D ( from Ebay)- brilliant cameras and very easy to use with great results xxxx

LOL @ Nikon being a dirty word..

Tim has tried to get away from the Nikon's but they do the job that its intended for...
Tim has looked into the Cannons but they didn't match the newly released Nikon.(for what he wanted it for)..
again it what you are going to do with the camera..

linzi did ask for recommendations:)..but as rose said you do need to indicate what you want to do with the camera...

Going on linzis first post about wanting a DSLR Tim found this to be the nearest affordable option....and will virtually do what the DSLR will do.

The next question is ..what has linzi been looking at...???
IF it was a compact then Tim would be recommending something else..lol:eek:

Okaaay, I'll pin my colours to the wall at this point... I have both a Canon and a Lumix ! :8855: My main camera is a Canon 5D MkII DSLR and my "handbag" camera is a Panasonic Lumix LX3 compact. I have a bagful of lenses for my DSLR - I don't tell hubby how many I have, or when I buy a new one ("New lens...? no, I've had it for ages !" :8855:) Photography has always been a passion of mine and I have my second solo exhibition next month.
