Are we ever allowed fizzy drinks

i was thinking the same as i watched her drink that and she did have fizzy on this morning yesterday also!

its advised against as the bubbles can cause discomfort in your pouch, i have coke but i let it go flat 1st and plenty of ice kills the gas

I have been told after time I can have fizzy drinks. Best to wait until you hit the sweet spot and then take it easy.

At my support group most post ops are drinking fizzy drinks. I think it is advised against more for bypassers, but I am not sure.

On the fill issue, it sounds like that is a maintenance fill, as the band naturally aspirates and looses saline over a period of time.

I was always told that I couldnt have fizz, its one of the things I remember my surgeon saying that it errodes the band. So Ive never touched it until went on holiday a couple of months ago and just couldnt find a drink at all that queched my thurst, so I had one glass of diet coke a day. Went to see Wendy on Monday who does my fills and I asked her what is your ruling on fizzy drinks and she said FINE. OMG its the one thing I have missed the most dont get my wrong she said dont go mad but we are allowed it.

Went out last night and had lime with slimline tonic (Wendy suggestion) and it queched my thurst lovely. Wished Id found this out before my holidays.

I was told it errodes the band as well but as my friend blonde moment advised me "HOW" when its on the outside of the stomach? I have had fizzy but only a couple of sips and I was fine. I think the sips were that tiny it was flat before I swallowed it lol

Hi Dee

I saw Wendy on Monday too. I told her that my brother had brought me champagne for my birthday (40th) and was gutted I couldt have any. She said that I could of had a small glass - guess I will have to try it over the weekend!

I dont discredit what you've said here but just interested to know how the coke would errode the band if the bands located on the outside of your stomach, surely fluids cant reach the band ? therefore wouldn't be able to errode it !

I also heard that, even if you 'flatten' your fizzy drink with ice and stirring there is still quite a lot of dissolved carbondioxide suspended in the liquid and, when it hits your stomach, the warmth activates it. Apparently the pressure can stretch your pouch. Mxx

Well I'm a bypasser and totally avoided it for months, but my medical team have told me 'soda' - so Americanised, is ok!! Like so many things after bariatric surgery everyone tolerates things differently. I have drank diet coke, diet lemonade, tonic water, cava and champagne and have been ok. Having said that, not very often and in little sips over a decent amount of time. As most of you will know, big glugs of any liquid generally doesnt work too well.
