Areoplane seats

Hi All,

Im due to fly with British Airways in a few months time. It will be before my RNY GP operation.

Im a bit concerned about the seat sizes. Im currently size 26, the bulk of my weight is based in the middle, my thighs and hips aren't so big.

My question is: Has anyone flown with BA? Were the seats ok for you? I'm thinking of upgrading to economy premium, do you think it's worth it (£400 more.)

The flight is approximately 7 hours long

Being honest I was a size 22/24 and I nearly couldnt get the belts done up and it was very uncomfortable.

Could you not get seat with extra leg room, that might help.

Sounds a lot of money for more comfort, how long will you be on the plane for.

right sweets ill be honest im a size 20/22 and i can get the seatbelt done up but its stretched to the very end and it was extremely uncomfortable... i couldnt get the tray fully donw in front of me, and the arm rests didnt sit down fully either cos of my hips, i do feel for you, it puts the fear of god into me having to get a flight...£400 is so much extra to pay, you would be ok if noone was sat next to you so you didnt feel self conscious and about the arm rests etc ....... could you say for medical reasons you need a seat by the toilet, they tend to have more room but it still doesnt mean seat space.... o sweets im not sure.... 7hrs is A LONG flight... im not sure what to suggest seat space you could be ok as you say you carry your weight on your middle, i wouldnt pay the extra actually, breathe in for take off, the you can lift arm rests etc when up in the air.... 400 pound is to much, xxx

dont rush into booking them premuim seats hun the price usually comes down eventually and you can upgrade later when it does - or if it doesnt - ive found every time i fly they are advertising the premium seats cheap on the flight itself - up to you if you want to risk it but £400 is mega expensive isnt it.

I was a size 26/28 before the op and we fly long haul every year. We have booked economy premium wherever possible and on some airlines the seat was still tight ! BA tends to be a lot better than most though - I didn't even need a seat belt extender sometimes. Another advantage of upgrading is more shoulder room as the seats aren't so close together. All helps to avoid the "pinned in" feeling for the duration of the fight ! With BA you can pre-select and book your seats online in advance - it's worth doing this, especially if you do stay in economy. I think they charge £25 for this option, but it's better than an extra £400 ! Look for the last two rows at the back of the plane where the fuselage narrows as there are often only two seats there instead of three (depending on the plane) and extra space between the window seat and the side of the plane. Avoid at all costs, the seats at the front of any economy section on any airline, as the seat dividers for the first two or three rows are usually solid which means you get even less room than the seat width !!! And because this is also where your TV remote & earphones usually get plugged in, it's absolute agony...

Thanks guys, this has been so helpful. I will pay the extra to pre-select & book with BA. I'll let you know how it goes :)

Im so sorry you are worrying about your flight seats even before you get to where you are going. Its awful isnt it?

I have been in the same situation so many times and always say never again am i going to put myself through the embarrassment again, but i have done time and time again.

I have always had to ask for a belt extension, but if you have a quiet word with the hostess she will do it for you if you need one.

The first time i flew i booked extra leg room but to be honest i didnt think the seats were much different in width but at least i could stretch my legs out as i am tall.

I have just booked a holiday for September next year and because i have my bypass in Dec i wont ever have the worry about seating on the plane ever again.

7 hours in a very long time to be sat uncomfortable on a plane lovey, i endured 5 and i wanted to cry, i wouldnt speak to anyone in the family as i was so uncomfy. I think you will be ok with extra leg room option though as i was slightly bigger than you.

I hope all goes well love and keep us all informed. Best wishes xxxx

I went to spain last year and i am a 26/28 and it was really uncomfortable to be honest my poor husband was all squashed and i had to ask for extender for my seatbelt and my flight was for only 2 hours x

Hi I have flown with them alot and I also ask for a deat extention. No problems at all no funny looks etc. Make flight far more comfortable and that is what it is about. ps I ask as soon as I get to the top of the stairs when they greet you and then they pass it to you as they walk pass.
mags x

Ive always had to ask for a seat belt extension, and I must say they have always been discreet about it. I hated being on a plane for this reason, always so uncomfortable. Cant wait for next holiday as I should be able to fit in the seat properly :D XX

Honestly! dont worry. Im like you big on the front but legs, hips etc not too bad. I flew on BA (qantas) to Australia. AND on my own with my 3 year old!

Honestly you will fit in, and you can also lift the arm rest between you and hubby??? - however I did also have to ask for an extention. I did this very quietly to the lady showing us to our seats, it was fine.
xx

I'm a 56inch waist and last year flew to America economy but we paid an extra £30 for the extra leg room seats they were very snug for me I had to have a seat belt extension but the extra room meant i could get the tray down no problem much better option than £400 for PE .Don't let it worry you ,you should just be excited about your holiday

I feel much better now, thank you all :)
I'll ask for a seat belt extension & lift up the arm rest as well.

Oh my poor lovey, the things we worry about, but I understand entirely how you feel! I haven't flown with BA so can't comment, but it sounds like everyone has given you sound advice! I flew with Easy jet last year...that was a squeeze I can tell you, but it was a small plane & I was too embarrassed to ask for a seat belt extender!

Where do you live hun? I live in Kingston, I just seen you have Surrey as your home addy. Claire x

awwww hun i feel for u i really do as ive been in this situation and infact any kinda seat i sit in i think will i fit will i fit, its not nice :( im a size 22-24 last time i flew i was a 20 and i flew with first choice, the belt fitted ut on the biggest it could go, although the lap tray didnt completly come down as i have a big middrift since the kiddies :( hope u have a great holiday, try not to worry like a few ppl have said pre book te extra leg room and ask for a belt extention im sure u wont be te only one on the plane to do this so try not to worry ave a fab time xxx
