Asking GP for referral tomorrow.

Well, the title says it all really. I have finally plucked up the courage and have an appointment to see my GP tomorrow to ask to be referred for plastics.

I still think that asking the GP for WLS was the hardest part of my WLS journey, and I am having the same fears now. My fears were unfounded with the WLS request so hopefully he will be as supportive tomorrow as he always is.

My tummy is my main concern. The skin hangs really low and I am getting infections so often that it is really getting me down. I am also unhappy with my boobs that are completely empty and hang to my waist, and my arms and thighs which are so baggy, but I do not expect the NHS to pay for anything. I am hopeful though that they will at least do the tummy and I could probably live with the rest if I have to.

I will update tomorrow to let you know how it goes. Please keep your fingers crossed, and if anyone has any tips about what to say to the Doc they would be gratefully received.

Just whip your clothes off stark (you know the next word) .... naked! And ask him if he'd like to live with it?

Seriously i think your gp is very understanding, just make a list of why you want it, what you think the benefits will be...

I so hope you get it, you've worked so hard to get where you are and deserve this final icing on your cake xx

Good luck, Sam.

From what I've heard from successful applicants, a wealth of 'evidence' helps. If you can bear to take photos of your tummy when the skin is sore and infected, this can help the surgeon see the impact it is having on your health.

Talk about the need for having your body 'reconstructed' to achieve 'normality' and don't mention the word 'cosmetic' at all! :)

Hi Sam

I'm hoping everything goes Ok. Advice below but this is mainly drawn from what my PCT ask for.

1. Reconstructive not cosmetic
2. Possibility of major skin break down owing to recurrent infections ...make sure you have appointments with the GP for each and everyone so that he has it recorded and any he has already recorded must go into the referral letter. If you have not consulted him re th eprvious infections its time for your own list, what form the infection took and what you treated it with and how long it took to clear plus how regularly they are recurring ..in one area? in many areas?
3. Impact on personal life ....problems with body image, sex life.
4. Emphasis on how you know this may be viewed as an exceptional funding procedure but feel all above make it valid.
5. Emphasis on how you know that they may ask for your weight to be at a stable figure for a certain amount of time but given NHS lists etc etc you wish to start the procedure now.

Thats what we require to refer here and we have been successful only twice but wls is difficult to access here also.

Best of luck I've got it all crossed

Thank you all so much for your advice and support. It means a lot.

So I went to the GP this morning, and I didnt need to lay it on too thick. He is a very supportive Dr and I am lucky to have him I think. I just asked him to take a look, reminded him of the recurrent infections (he has prescribed cream in the past) and said that whilst I understood the current pressure on NHS budgets I hoped he would refer me to a specialist so they could take a look. I only really focused on my tummy during the appointment. I said that whilst ALL of my loose skin bothers me, the stomach is the worst area.

He examined me, and agreed that the skin was very bad, was unlikely to improve with any further weight loss/exercise and dictated the letter there and then.

Just got to wait for the appointment to come through now, but thats the first hurdle out of the way.
