Awful pain-any ideas?

Hi everyone

I had my first fill a week last Friday and all seemed fine, a slight increase in restriction.
A week later on the Friday I felt really poorly. I had had prawns for the first time that lunch time and thought they may be to blame. I was just about to cancel my classes because of the pain when it suddenly went.
Then last night the pain came back... With vengeance. It started just before I went to bed and just got worse and worse. I eventually got my husband to ring the out of hours medical service. They booked an appointment with a doctor at our out of hours hospital for 3.20am. We arrived at the hospital but it was all locked up. By then I was bent in double with pain right over my port site through into my back. We then phoned again but the doctor was delayed. We then asked for an ambulance but they said that because I was already in a car I should go to hospital my self. Then as we set off the pain stopped. The paramedic we had spoken to thought I might have a twisted or strangled hernia, but I think it was something to do with the band.

I just wondered if anyone had any ideas what I should do. The pain lasted for 5 hours and was not touched by tramadol which I take for other things. But it was gone so quickly I really don't know what I should ask for from my doctor. The band provider was hopeless so it would be down to my GP.

My tummy was swollen all day today, but I would expect that after being in so much pain. I was hyperventilating and my tummy and back muscles were in spasm. I feel like I was kicked in my tummy.
At ideas???

do you have an emergency number for your provider? I so you need to call I and speak to them, it's what they are there for, more so than your gp.

Prawns can be difficult to digest after a fill, and it maybe that some of it got stuck, I would in the meantime go back to liquids only to allow hints to settle, but definitely call your provider as a matter of urgency because you should not experience pain like this.

is it possibly heartburn I went to a+e thinking I was having a heart attack it was so painfull it was went from breastbone down my ribs and into my back horrendous pain .I thought I was about to die:(

I would call your provider and talk them through your symptoms, sounds like something is not quite right

How are you doing? have you contacted your provider etc? Hoping you're ok!

It sounds like gall bladder pain I had, it comes on after eating and can be excruciating. Slightly to the right and behind my ribs knowing pain going from front to back. Steadily getting worse and staying around for up to 5 or 6 hours before disappearing, leaving tenderness and aching in the area for a day or two.

Mine was gall stones usually suffered by women who have had kids and especially after weight loss. I had gall bladder removed after suffering these attacks twice a week for 2 years. An ultra sound can diagnose it.

Could be something else but I wouldn't be surprised if it was that.

Good Luck

Many thanks for the replies. I haven't done anything because the pain hasn't come back. I did as you suggested TK and stayed on liquids for 24hours and it hasn't returned. So I'm going with food stuck or not chewing enough or something my fault! If it even hints at coming back I will be back in touch with THG.
I did contact them during the night on the 24 hour emergency but the person on duty was a dietician!

Well hello everybody

Sorry I haven't been in touch but I have just spent a week in hospital!

Last Friday at 4 am I had another bad attack of pain and my husband took me to A&E. I was admitted into the hospital and given an ultrasound and they discovered a massive infection in my gall bladder and suspected a gall stone stuck in my bile duct. I spent 5 days on IV antibiotics and then they discovered that my liver function tests were 5 times higher than normal. So another few days in hospital until the levels went down enough for me to be out of serious danger.

I've now got to see the surgeon about removing my gall bladder as it is full of stones but they have to be sure the infection is gone before they will consider removal.
I also have to see the liver specialists as the results indicate that there is a separate issue going on there.

So all in all its been a scary experience. Add to that that I was supposed to be going on holiday to Tenerife last Saturday with my husband and two teenage girls. So they went without me as it was unfair to expect my husband to loose his holiday. At the time I didn't think I would be in hospital quite that long and or quite so serious!!!

I'm still feeling rubbish, but at least I have managed to loose a kilo!!

Another really annoying thing is that the gall stone diet I have to follow includes lots of carbs and zero (as close as possible) fat. I'm ok with the fat bit but with the band we are supposed to be really careful with bread and pasta. I'm waiting to speak to my dietician.

Topkat you were right, I should have gone to the GP the first time the pain kicked in!!!

Tubbytutor, even if you had gone to your GP, no guarantee they would have found it that quickly. It was only because you were a hospital admission. My mother was going to GP, the out of hours service and outpatients appointments, urgent scan (3 weeks!) but it wasn't until doctor took blood tests when giving morphine injection that she became an urgent surgical admission... well five days later when results came back! She had the same raised white cell count and bad liver function results. She had told them it was gallstone pain, but had gallbladder removed 1970. So beware, you can get gallstones even if you don't have a gallbladder. She is still not fixed, 2cm stone stuck in duct, temporary stent fitted but she still has trouble eating fat.

Same also happened to my brother when he had pancreatitis caused by blocked bile duct. His and mother's stones didn't show up on ultrasound, took MRI to find them. Brother had to endure lots of questions about his drinking habits, before they even started looking for gallstones.

Glad things are looking up for you now, even if you did miss a holiday!

Here is a tried and tested method for passing gallstones. I've literally had enough room to fit the 5 steps in but the bit before and after in the process is just a quick intro then after 5 says the morning after you should pass ALL stones.

Hope it helps if you want to give it a go x

Really does sound like gallstone/gallbladder pain, caused me to ring 999 once before i now what it was.... worst pain ever.
unfortunately us ladies r high risk, they say think of the 4 f's. female, fat, forties and fertile.
Also the risk of stones increasing with rapid weight loss. Best get yourself the GP, its easy to forget about when the pain is gone, but then when it returns there is nothing you can do. My GP gave me pethadine tablets until i could get an appointment for an abdo scan.
Good luck, hope it doesn't return.

:wave_cry:sorry i had missed all what had happened above, didnt realice u had been in hospital when i sent my post....
so so sorry u had to miss your holiday what a shame.. thamk god you know thou hay.. nightmare pain like i said. Get them ******* out...

I can empathise, I had infected gall bladder then after surgery an abcess where it was because it was infected, very painful, I hope they whip it out quick so you can get it over and on with your life. It is very painful, but I am reassured that they are waiting for the infection to go before operating so hopefully it will be straightforward when they do it. Good luck

Thanks you so much everyone for the messages.

I am feeling really poorly still and have a temp. My lymph nodes are all swollen and my tongue swollen with moth ulcers.

I felt so bad I called the triage nurse at my GPs as my lovely dr is on holiday. He told me to go in to see senior nurse practioner. I got there and they had changed me to see the worst dr in the practice. He's a mesogonistic *******. He basically told me I was wrong about everything the hospital had told me! What an arse.

Anyway I know what they said and I will follow their instructions. All I wanted was to check that the new symptoms of swollen glands and itching were not enough to warrant going back to hospital.

Anyway thanks again for the comments and concerns, it is lovely to have some support.
