Band - not as good

fatbutnot4eva

Loves her gorgeous family
I had my 5th appointment last week with my 6 month weight management course and she said that there had been a meeting in france and the new details were that the band was not as good as the bypass and there were more after op problems.
she "tried to steer me to a bypass and said that the surgeons prefered this !!!
I said band only for me she said no probs just to let surgeon know my decision
But my min weight would be 13stone13 minimum !!!!! as only 50% was guaranteed.
what do you lot think ? and have you heard that the band is not as good as first thought

hi helen the band is as good as the bypass for results, its just a longer slightly more harder process to achieve the same results, the band does have more after op problems than a bypass, these generally include...

1. lots of band ajustments to achieve the perfect restriction level this does take time, and further ajustments to maintain the sweet spot long term as fill is naturally lost over a few months and larger quantities can be eaten when this occurs.

2. port flips, this is when the port turns over and the fill needle can not access the port hole.

3. band slippage, rare but can happen.

4. mind ajustment, cheating the band and eating high calory slider foods such as chocolate and ice cream to compensate real foods.

the 50% of weight loss they talk about is a guide line, any thing past that 50% can be achieved in my personal opinion, as if you want something bad enough in life anything can be achieved with a bit of hard work and determination.

I would love to know more info on the "meeting in france" did she say anymore as I would like to have a little look see about what was said and who ran the meeting etc...?

edited to add I have done a seach of the inmternet and can't find much to back this up the International Obesity Task Force had a meeting/ conference in Monte Carlo but I cant find any news from that backing up what was said to you if anyone else can find it please let me know as would be very interested to read it.Ta

I could'nt have gone for the bypass as I'm not brave enough. As Liz says its what you want out of it that matters and if you are willing to put in the work.13 stone would suit me as its better than the 19.5 I am now but I feel more able to get below that with the band as my aid. Good luck with what you decide but as I said I'm personally not brave enough for something thats that invasive so its the band for me on 1st may. Take care xx Gaynor xx

It's impossible to say that the band is not as good as bypass, as the results to some extent are going to depend on the patient. Each procedure has its pro's and con's, and whilst it is true to say that bypass patients *generally* lose their weight quicker, the same results could be achieved with a band over time if the patient is commited and works with the band to achieve results.

I have chosen a bypass as I believe it is *better for me*. That doesnt mean that it is better for everyone though.

i have chosen bypass as i wanted somthing that i could change my mind about and i didnt like the thought of all the hassel of keep having the band ajusted. sorry i meant to say could not change my mind about as i am very weak willed

I agree with Sam's post...there are different ops because we are all different....I guess I wanted to be constantly reminded that I cannot over eat or cheat, although I do sin now and then (Liz lol)...also without having had the band I cannot say whether or not it would be better or worse than what I have now...I did feel bypass was right for me and it helped when the surgeon also agreed with my reasons...all I can suggest is lots of research and ask as many questions as you want in order to feel the right choice for you....xx
