Belly up op 

Will post my op disaster on here when back on my pc but suffice to say my bypass op didnt go to plan at all and i nearly died twice:( if it wasnt for my cousin looking at my stomach at home a few days after release. I think patients are released too quick sometimes after such major surgery and not monitored enough.

Oh dear, sorry to hear it didnt go to plan. Would be very interested to hear what happened when you are up to posting.

Get well soon x

My op july 5th 2009 is still a date never to forget pushed out after 3 days with possible complications is not good as the bypass tube stitched to the new stomach perforated and split!

Rushed back in on 14th july and thought i was dying ,couldnt breath at all and blanked out, bodyfilled up with fluids weighing 2 and half stone and got septicemia and septic shock.

Spent 4 days in a coma and family were told i'd probably not recover twice in those days and that it was in the lap of the gods

Luckily i pulled through and spent 6 weeks in itu and another 4 weeks in hdu and 4 weeks on a normal ward but in that time it was still leaking slightly and nil by mouth for 4 months

In that time i lost my partner of 21 years as she got used to quietness at home and couldn't handle nursing stress, my business and thousands of pounds in cash supporting everyone while i was ill, then released november with open wound and then the crap started again

The wound got wider and developed into a massive hernia like half a football on my stomach which has had 2 skin grafts with no luck and now finally in in hospital again next week for major op cutting sides both and then stiching pigskin in and pulling all three wounds together and having 3 long scars hjopefully and a flat tum but at 80% im not celebrating with my luck.

Solicitors are involved as negligence can be proved so a long court case seems on the cards as im off work probably another twelve months disabled down left side and cant walk or sit for long so its ****ed my life up for 2 years or more and im not letting it lie.

So do think of the consequences fully of bypass surgery it can go wrong and kill you as a few cases are popping up more often now as it becomes more widespread.

What went wrong ?

post awaiting ciearence which is odd

Hi Scott,

have now approved your post. when a new member posts quite a long post it needs a moderator to approve it. This is how most of the spam posts are filtered out before they reach the main forum

Your story is incredible, and whilst a little frightening for those that are pre-op, its important that pre-oppers are aware of the things that can go wrong.

How are you now? Was your op done privately or NHS?

Sorry to hear of your troubles Scott, Sams right though thanks for sharing your story because people do need to know the risks of Wls x ive sent a friends req both on here and fb ok x

Hi Scott,

That's awful, just makes you realise that not everyone has it straight forward, thanks for sharing this.

Blimey this is scary. So sorry to hear you had such major complications!
Can you share who did your surgery (surgeon), private or NHS?

All the best for your recovery. And thank you for sharing your story with us.

It was on the NHS but done by the same surgeon that my friend had private, i dread to think of the bills run up if i was private or would the initial fee cover it?

Mainly due to intestines, where stitched to new stomach perforated and started the leak that filled my body of fluids and pushed all my organs up so i couldn't breathe or talk at the end i thought i was having a heart attack then i blanked out in hospital reception.

When admitted in that state i had 27 machines on me as well as full life support (this is making me cry as i type) and hearing a lot later my family were in a side room wih a vicar and doctors saying my chances were minute of survival :(

But thankfully i pulled through as im like an ox but after 4 months in bed my legs wouldn't work so i've a limp now as left side is all numb and i get pins needles 24/7 im 43 in 2 weeks so im hoping i'll be out of hospital to celebrate a little.

In the last 4 months ive had two large skin grafts off both legs to try cover but they failed for plasticsso finally this pigskin op and cutting both sides to slide in two pieces hopefully will be the end but as i know i can be unlucky :/

My diabetes has gone from 15 plus to 5, i take no drugs at all now and 13 stone lighter are the plusses, can't wait to work and go swimming and get a life again.

Wow, what a sobering story. How sad, a real eye opener. We are all warned about the risks but your story really brings them home. Hope you are recovering well ....Take care x

OMG what a journey you have been through and thanks for sharing it. I hope you get the answers/compensation you deserve from the hospital as that is just awful

Good luck with your health and hopefully you won't ever have to experience ill-health again.

Oh my goodness...what a horrific story. I really really feel for you Scott - you are so brave and must be so strong to come through all of this. What an amazing man!

OMG indeed Scott, what a terrible time you have had i'm so sorry that things have been a night mare for you. It is important to post the flip side to the straightforward ops as surgery has to be given serious thought. Thank you for sharing your difficult journey and i really hope you get everything sorted and your health continues to improve. Please keep us posted on your journey. xx
