Bowel movements?

Eek I feel embarrassed to talk about this lol but I need help and I don't want to bug my surgeon if I don't have to. I have not had a bowel movement since aug. 14th. The day before my surgery. I have been drinking milk of magnesia for 3 days now and still nothing! Is this normal? I had the roux- en-y. So any help would be appreciated. My surgeon sent me home with this really nasty stool softener and I can not for the life of me get it down. It is absolutely horrible in taste. So that's why I started taking the milk of magnesia. What did some of you take? How long until you had a bowel movement?

Oh ok. How soon after surgery were you able to take the senna tablets?

My hubby was the same and was told to get Dulcoease capsules from his team at hospital and they worked great, he went the day after quite easily as well.

Noone said when I could but dietician said senna was ok to use as many experience hard stools after op. I first took it 2wks after the op and still take it occasionally if I don't go every day. X

My hospital sent me home with Senakot liquid which helps. Im 7 weeks post surgery and still struggle if I dont take it. I believe this is normal though as we are eating so little x

Does the senakot liquid taste gross??

They sent me home with a liquid colace.. and not to sound to nasty.. but it tastes like stomache bile! And no matter what i mix it with, the taste is still strong!! I tryed calling my doc today to see what he says.. but he was busy so i have to try tomorrow :/ i wish they would have given me a after surgery book.. kind of like what they give you when your pregnant lol. It would be so much easier!

If I have problems in that department (and I have done since having a gastric band) I find that three teaspoons of Lactulose does the trick. I love the taste of it. I have also been advised that Movicol which you mix with water (and it doesn't go thick like Fybogel) is extremely effective - it is especially good for the real hard impacted constipation that can sometimes happen.

Constipation can make people laugh when you mention it but it can be agony and the straining and pushing cannot be good for your insides following bypass.

I am having a bypass in two weeks and just hope and pray that I can still take the lactulose (was told that one person got dumping with it).

Hope you get sorted out and that you find something that works well for you (((((hugs)))))

Oh thanks so much for the info. I have actually gotten better since taking the senna tablets. That and drinking a small cup of coffee in the morning has really helped me also.

Senna liquid and a warm drink will shift it hun!Dont use Lactulose if you have had a bypass it has sugars and you might dump!Oh the joys of wls!

Oh the joys of bypass surgery :)

I also suffer from constipation and it isn't any fun!

I used to 'go' 1-2 a day before op,, now I am lucky if I go 1-2 a week!

Your food intake is less. so passing it through will be less often.

I do suffer from 'soft, sticky stools' that build up in lower bowel and rectum and it is so uncomfortable.

If I havn't been for more than 4 days and start to get uncomfortable I take Movicol. That normally does the trick.

But If I still havn't been, I also use a glycerin suppository and Movicol and attack the problem from both ends, This normally does the trick within 24 hours

Also keep up the fluids :D
