I am worried about constipation or diarrhoea following surgery. Do you usually suffer from one or the other, depending on the surgery? Please can you post what op you had and whether you suffer from constipation or diarrhoea, predominantly.

Thank you!!! xxxx

Sleeve - first 6 weeks was diorrhoea or constipation, has settled abit now but do get odd days hun xx

Band. Dreadful constipation for 6 days. Eased it with syrup of figs at bedtime. Now regular every 2 days, even though still on fluids.

I had bypass. After op didn't open bowels for 5 days but wasn't constipated. Only had op 4 weeks ago. For past couple of weeks I go about 3 times a week I guess I am a little constipated now. I hope it will get better once on normal foods as still on purée stage. Hope this helps.

I am 3 weeks post bypass and i didnt open my bowels for 4 days... but came home from hospital with lactolose to take for 7 days.. and im regular every morning xx

ooh the things we discuss lol x

I am also a bypasser & don't struggle with either since my first time 4 days post op. I also go most days. :D xxx

Bypass, squits (only real word for it!) for 5-7 days post op. Then normal after that.

My diet was mainly home made veg soup and nas jellys in the early days x

Have not had surgery but for generally keeping things in motion (regularly!), I find ground flaxseed to be invaluable. I buy it from Holland & Barrett but have seen the one i get (think it's by Linwoods) in Tesco recently so is more easily accessible now. As a bonus of taking it daily, my hair has become noticably thicker! :D

Gosh I sound as though I'm being paid commision to promote it!!! Sorry if that seems the case.

But am hoping that if I do go down the surgery route, some sort of natural solution such as flaxseed or prunes will come through for me! :)

Hi Wannabe, I had a bypass op. Before I went into hospital I took laxatives and had a good clear out. Post op I had a lot of wind and didn't open my bowels for about 4 days so I took more laxatives and once I started with my pureed foods I did start going again. Now I am eating normal food, with lots of fruit - and some very bad biscuits - and I am quite loose and it is a very pale colour, I mean like the colour of putty. I think this might be caused by the fat content of food which isn't getting absorbed.
I think that if you eat a sensible diet (when you reach stage four) your bowels movements shouldn't trouble you. Good luck and keep posting.

Thank you to everyone who has replied. It looks like a mixed bag then! Some constipation, some diarrhoea, some normal. Just like before surgery!

I think neeta is right about the fluid though!

what laxatives can a bypass post opper take? I was bypassed on 14th Dec and still not been yet  I know there shouldn't be much in there but as I've not been for over a week now (since 12th Dec) I think something should have 'moved' by now!
