Burn calories to lose weight???

They say you need to burn more calories than you eat, I think it's something like 3500 aday to lose 1lb a week... So why do I lose say 5/6 pounds sometimes I can lose more if I'm really really trying when I'm immobile and do pretty much nothing, so will I have to excercise alot after iv had my op ? I'm really don't understand it all... I definatly do not burn anywhere near more than I eat even on a good day?
 
The heavier you are the more calories you burn off per activity as the body needs to work harder to do even the most basic movement. Having said that, I totally understand your question as it still doesn't seem to add up x
 
Some of a big loss may well be water weight. Also you need to take into account that your body burns some calories just through living. And the 3500 deficit is over a week, not just one day :)
