Hi everyone, hope I'm posting in the correct place,I have recently received news that funding has been approved for a gastric bypass @ prh Telford under Mr Manel Riera,I have a bmi of 53,along with chronic venous insufficiency leading to varicose ulcers, hoping weight loss will aid the healing of these.
My wife seems to have more reservations than me,I'm forever the optimist,I have a few questions, what is dumping syndrome, how long should I expect to be off work, what will my diet consist of for the first few weeks,I am booked to attend a education session before finally deciding if I want the surgery, but to be honest my mind's made up,looking forward to the first day of the rest of my life

Hi and congratulations for the funding decision.

I had my op on 22 Feb, 6 weeks ago tomorrow, and am over the moon with my decisions.

I've no experience of dumping but I believe it's caused by eating stuff too high in sugar/ft and can make people nauseous, shaky and in need of a rest.

My guidelines - in Derby - was around 2 weeks off for an office job, longer for a manual job. I work from home and was at my desk a week after the op.

Again it varies area to area but my post op diet was a week on liquids, 2 weeks puree, 2 weeks mash, 2 weeks soft (I'm just getting to the end of that now - thank heavens for crackers and toast - as you chew them to much many areas count them as soft foods) and then normal (small portion) food.

For me this is the best thing I've ever done and I'm impatient to be a skinny-mini but please have a good look round the forum and ask questions at the education session as it is worth being aware of potential problems.

I have so many questions regarding post op,what is the daily intake of fluid, what types of fluid are acceptable, will carbonated sugar free pop be a big no no?are tea & coffee ok,flavoured water, orange juice ,or must it be a milky drink that contains both protein & the necessary vitamins, what vitamin supplements are required,I have an education session booked for 15th April,so I'm sure most questions will be answered then.

:woohoo:

Best to leave fizzy liquids for quite a while. Until after your check-up with your specialist. Sugar free juice is ok tp pep the taste buds up.

Hi & welcome kgb congrats on getting your funding too. Hopefully you won't be waiting too long x

next appt with consultant is 19th April,so I expect to be considered for bypass within the next few months, have to lose 10kg first though, but to be honest I'm already planning ahead,my weight is now affecting my everyday work, heart thumping through my chest wall whenever I see steps, feeling tired & difficult to motivate myself to do anything outside the home, partly because of the constant p*ss taking by the public, wish they would realize just how difficult a weight problem is to manage, fed up of old fashioned outsized clothing, would love to be active with the grand-children whilst they are still young enough to want to play with grandad

good luck hun

Just a quick update,I've been for my education session, lost the 10kg surgeon asked for, booked for surgery 10th June, surgeon did say 4 to 6 wks needed off work post surgery?seems quite a long time?

Great news on the date. Time off depends on your type of work and it also seems to depend on an individuals recovery. I felt well enough a week or so after but not 100% well

What did you manage to eat & drink for the first few days post op?

Received confirmation today,pre-op assessment 24/05 ,surgery 10/06,what is actually involved with pre-op assessment & is it likely that I will then be put on the liver shrinkage diet?
