Bypass only works for 18 months ??????????

Hi Guys

I have just been talking to a lady who has had the bypass last year and she tells me that the bypass no longer works after 18 months..........is this true as i have not heard this anywhere???????????

Take care all thanks for your continuing support, you are all worth your weight in gold x

That sounds like for someone with minimal input from them..(eg no effort to change the lifestyle and adopt regular exercise and healthy eating), to me...not sure 100% but that's what jumps out as a possible reason...or excuse perhaps? Can't have this surgery alone then hope for the best and expect results and maintaining a healthy weight longterm..it's a very foolish attitude. Any WLS is a chance to give you a head start to a healthier life and a second chance at looking after yourself properly..it's not instead of real effort ! How can a bypass stop working if you change your lifestyle and there are no medical problems with it?

The physical bypass may only last for a limited time, until the pouch stretches and dumping sensitivity decreases. But the psychological effects should last a lifetime.

The bypass is a means of 'starting anew', an opportunity to rid ourselves of the terrible habits we all had. 7 months post-op, it is now that the hard work starts for me. For the first six months it was easy; didn't need to think about anything, couldn't eat large amounts, couldn't eat sweet stuff, easy peasy! Now though, I can eat sweet things, bikkies, cakes etc., I can eat bread (I reckon I could eat 2-3 slices if I pushed myself), I can eat a normal amount (just ate a whole meal for one). But the lessons that I've learnt in the first six months will help me stay on track.

Exercise is now part of my life which I couldn't have done properly before, and it will remain part of my life. Food choices should now be easier, although I still struggle with self-sabotage. When I am choosing well, I am choosing high protein, filling foods. And as for appearance, now that I've seen the new me in normal sized clothes, I won't go back to the old me.

thanks girls ......i know i am already beginning to learn new eating habits so i believe yes as you say its a lifestyle change and not relying onthe bypass .............thanks again

I am struggling to understand what this lady means: ...'no longer works'...what does she think happens after this magical 18 months cut-off point? Does the stomach pounch reattach itself to the rest of the stomach? Does the lower small intestine reattach itself to the rest of the small intestine? The very nature of the bypass means it is (virtually) irreversible, which is why this procedure is the only intervention that has proven results in drastic, long-term weight loss.

I agree with Neen, in that I think this woman may be under the impression that zero input/effort is required on her part. The bypass isn't a magic wand...you don't have the op & wake up the next day 10 stone lighter. It is a tool to be used in conjunction with a committed change in diet & activity levels, i.e. healthy eating & increased physical exercise, a bypass on its own per se can only do so much.

Is this point of view based on this lady's personal experience? If so, it sounds like she wasn't well informed or psychologically prepared for the surgery in the first place. Don't worry Tracey, you are, so you will be successful!

I agree with Angie, it is a life long surgery, the bits dont just reattach themselves and begin to regrow after eighteen months, short of a reversal you are always going to have that bypass. Perhaps after eighteen months you have gotten out of the 'golden' period, where the weight seems to fall off sometimes without any help from yourself, but it doesnt just stop working, your body just gets used to the new you I think, that is how I interpreted it anyway, my body will eventually get used to the new way that it is plumbed and at that point I sure as hell better have a new regime of eating and living or I will undo my good work, but that isnt because my bypass has stopped working, I will still be bypassed, it will just be that my body is used to being this way and will need some help to stay slim and healthy, which is what the average non surgically altered body needs anyway.
Your friend obviously isnt very educated on her bypass and I think that maybe she needs to 'bone up' on what is going on inside her body.
You will do great by the way xx

What a load of rubbish. I have met loads of people several years out and they are either maintaining their weight loss or still losing. Like anything else, it requires effort.

i agree it what a loada tosh, i know many many bypassers all at different stages, theres maybe a couple that abuse what they have but it has to be very severe abuse of the pouch to regain weight x

thanks guy s you all interupt it the same way i do............... so i just thought i was going mad when she said it .......................

Perhaps she's gone slightly mad (with the lack of info & support I wouldn't wonder)....not that there's anything wrong with madness, I hasten to add, as I frequently have mad episodes!

I agree with everyone - how does the stomach get back to it's original size - especially in my case - most of my stomach went in the bin!!

And the maladsorptive element isn't going to just vanish is it?

Ignorance is such a dangerous weapon!!

And WLS such a valuable tool

Maybe she just got confused, i've read that if your over 300lbs then you have what they call a 'honeymoon period' of weightloss of 18 months and 12 months if your under 300lb, perhaps it's imformation like this that she muddled up?? or maybe she is just mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm coming up for 2 years post op, and mine still works! A little too well lol, I have to eat a lot to maintain my weight.

I will agree that dumping sensitivity lessens. Having eaten a full size white magnum Wednesday and had no ill effects whatsoever, I know I couldn't have done that even 12 months ago. Luckily for me though it's not a bad thing as I need the extra calories.

Maybe she's discussing the 'optimum' weight loss time?

Dotty chic you are mad xx
