Bypass or band?

Hi, i'm new to this site and before i begin my story i have to say thanks to whoever started it. Having spent hours last night looking at all the posts i figure this is the right place for me.

Right my story is like a lot of peoples i guess, fell in love, got pregnant, got fat and continued to grow. 4 years ago my gp referred me for bariatric surgery after me giving him all my reasons for wanting to lose weight and all the diets going not working for me. Unfortuantely i missed one appt at the hospital and was discharged. I didn't chase my gp to contact the hospital at the time as i was coping with a marriage breakdown and didn't believe i was in the right frame of mind and i would try yet again to do it on my own.

So anyway that hasn't worked for me so this week i went to see my new GP and explained that i'd been trying to lose weight and that i have recently been diagnosed Type 2 diabetic it was important to me to be rid of the excess weight. He has referred me to Walsall Hospital and told me i would have to choose between a Bypass or Banding. I have looked at both operations and wonder if there is a better success rate on one than the other?

Also if anyone has been to Walsall what were there experiences of it like?

Thanks in advance x

Hi,

I'm sure someone with more experience than me will be along soon to advise you on this. Just wanted to say Hi and welcome really.

From the reading I've done the bypass tends to provide a faster intial weightloss, as the band has to be adjusted to get it right for you, but I think I have read that after a longer period of time the overall weightloss is about the same. I'm waiting for a bypass date as I know I wouldnt be disciplined enough to work with the band. Dont know anything about Walsall sorry but I think others on here do.

Xx

I suspect you will go the bypass route as this aids in the reduction and sometimew total turn around of diabeties as well as other weight related illness such as BP, hypothroidism ect.

Welcome to mini's a great group for support and advise, there is a large WM group on here

HiYa and welcome to minis,
I went for bypass, because i knew i wouldn't be able to cope with the band and didn't want the hassle of going for fills. I wanted something permanent and a total lifestyle change. I wouldn't have had the will power to work with the band, so it was bypass for me and I don't regret it one bit. Its been the best thing ever.
Only you can decide which is best for you, but whatever you decide I wanted to wish you the best of luck on your journey.

Yes i think the bypass is definitely the way to go for me also. Thanks for the advice folks.

Hi Julie

I went for a band because I didnt have too much weight to lose plus I had no co morbidities. It was a case of nipping the weight gain in the bud as no doubt the bigger I got the more chance I would have of becoming diabetic.

Di (Tendersage) is right the bypass is usually recommended to diabetic patients or those with an underactive thyroid. My OH has both of these and has approached our GP about WLS - unfortunatly he is not heavy enough to get funding through our PCT.

All the best with your journey, there are lots of members on here who have had their ops through Walsall.

hi, i have the same problem, don't know which one to have, i'v got till the 14th aug to make my mind up. i think i'll go for the band because of my age more than any other reason, i think i'm to old to be sliced and diced, and there no way i will go exess skin removal.
but then again i might go for the bypass, it's quicker and no going back for fills.
oooooooooooh i don't know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont worry Sue, they will talk through the options and help you decide which is the best for YOU! :D

Hi Julie, I'm new here too and have to make up my minde which route to take. The encocrinologist recommended a bypass, but I'll wait and see what Mr Ammori reccommends when I get my referral.
I'm sure your Consultant will help you decide what is best, at least I hope so? All the best on your journey and decision.
