Bypass VS sleeve

After reading many threads/posts etc Im having second thoughts about my bypass. I have already seen surgeon and requested bypass a few questions. Is it too late to change my mind and request a sleeve ?? do you have dumping with the sleeve its just that there seems to be more health issues with bypass than sleeve although people say you lose more with bypass. Im worried Im making a drastic mistake with bypass than I would be with sleeve ie having to tkae multi vits etc for rest of life and other things going around in my mind. Please could get some advise on the reason you came to your decision and your thoughts.

You can still dump with the sleeve, I have occasionally but it has been when I;ve had something really sweet. I think you dump with the bypass more often. I still take supplements, as although there are no absorption issues, you don't absorp B12 well because of the part of the stomach that's been removed. And because of the reduced amount of food you eat, you also need to take a good multi vitamin too. Unfortunately, unlike the bypass, you do absorb all of the calories you consume!!

I had similar thoughts.. I am afraid to go with bypass and get all the vitamin and mineral malabsorbtion.. And the issues that come with it. But i always keep thinking what if the sleeve is not enough for me? I need to loose lots of weight.. As like you said statistics show a bit better weight loss with bypas..

I really dont think i need dumping as one more thing to control me.. I think my issues were hunger and not feeling any restriction. Even dietitian said i eat rather healthy just way too much. And dietitian suggested sleeve was the best option for me.

i did say to the team i prefered the sleeve but will go with bypass if they decide its better for me. I was not 100% set on any of the procedures when i had my appointments.. i did express all my concerns i have about bypass and that i would feel more comfortable with sleeve. But my letter said they put me on the waiting list for bypass.. So not sure if its just standard letter.. or they decided i would be better of with bypass... Even though now i think that i should really have sleeve.. Guess i am going to find out on the day of surgery.. I will see surgeon only on the day of the surgery now.. And i am afraid if i tell him i actually decided on sleeve that he will cancel the op.. Or not do it as he will think i am not ready.. Changing my mind.. (Even though i have never said to any of the team members that i wanted bypass..)

Llora I would speak to your bariatric team and dietitians mine said its not too late just get onto it asap you will prob need to change waiting list and may get it sooner. Im thinking now after going to group this may be the best thing for me. I have to really be sure but today have heard all positives with regarding bypass so now my mind has changed again . Just wihs i was given a date and i know i wont change my mind.Where you having your surgery?? They wont cancel your op.

Well but i always keep in mind that surgeons and the whole bariatric team they are specialists.. And no matter how much research i do.. They will know more.. They will know better. So i really think i should stick to whatever my team recomends.

I am under care of st. Georges hospital in tooting.

And i am going to my pre op assesment tomorrow.

Wishing with my whole heart that they dont find any issues that would cancel the surgery... I am worried.. Me getting this amazing oportunity.. Just too good to be true.. :)

I chose bypass because I didn't think Sleeve would be as effective for me and I also didn't like the idea of a part of me being removed and chucked in the bin (each to their own!)

I am coming up 5 months out, have not dumped and had no issues at all so far. If you eat sensibly, then dumping should not be an issue for you. I am virtually cured of my choccy addiction too as a bonus. :)

As far as vitamins go, on the sleeve and bypass we eat much smaller amounts so there is an argument that you will need to top up your diet regardless with vits to ensure that you are getting optimal nutrition.
I take a multi-vit, a B12 sublingual tablet and a calcium chew which cause no issues. They are better than the pain meds I was popping before the op.

I would as others have done, urge you to speak to your team about what is best for you, but I can say that Bypass in my experience is nothing to worry about but we are all different so please go and talk things through, it will put your mind at rest.

Personally IMHO the bypass is the most effective procedure. Yes there is the malabsorption but realistically if you're on top of your vitamins and nutrition it can be a non issue. In my experience surgeons are quicker to identify physical issues caused by the bypass.

Sorry to hijack your thread for a moment - but WOW Yve, look at you in your dress - so lovely. Congratulations! (Hijack over!)

Make sure you do as much research and talk to professionals as possible, which is what I did to come to a decision to have a bypass :)

On the whole the bypass is said to be more effective than the sleeve although I have seen a fair number of sleeves here who have had fantastic results so not convinced on that statistic. However being known as the queen dumper of bypassers I have to say I don't find it controlling at all. I had WLS to better my health & to eat more healthily. The things that make me dump aren't in that genre so why would it be controlling?? I didn't particularly eat unhealthy foods prior to my surgery either but I did find it an eyeopener once I started looking in depth at what I ate as regards fat, sugar & portions etc via my fitness pal. I had WLS knowing that my eating habits had to change and change for good. That said I too wanted the sleeve but was told by my surgeon that the bypass would yield a better loss and that because I suffered reflux that this wouldn't be the ideal op for me anyway. I have not regretted it one bit ;)

I originally thought that I wanted the sleeve rather than the bypass - but after loads of research and surgeon's advice went for the bypass. One reason was my hiatus hernia and my being prone to ulcers, but the most compelling reason for me is that the bypass has been around for many years and it has excellent outcomes for keeping the wright off if you work with it properly. The sleeve is relative recent - and there hadn't been time for a long-term study on later effectiveness. But in the end, it is your body and only you know what you want from this. Do listen to your team to help you with this decision.

I picked the sleeve because I am youngish - 31 and haven't started a family yet. I wanted to ensure I didn't have issues with malabsorption during pregnancy and that I wouldn't need to have vitamin shots etc... I also liked the idea of 3/4 of my stomach being permanently removed rather than just hanging out in my body! Another pro for me was less joins which I concluded meant less room for issues.

I had my sleeve 3.5 months ago and have now lost 5 stone including 2 week pre op diet. I don't regret a thing.

There is no concrete evidence for the long term success of the sleeve as it is a relatively new procedure compared to the bypass - the research only goes up to 5 years post op whereas the bypass goes up to 10 years + case studies.

I think at the end of the day, there's no right or wrong answer it's a very personal decision and either way if you follow the advice provided by your team you will succeed.

Yes that is one of the main reasons why i didnt make my mind up to have sleeve. It feels more reassuring for me that bypass was done for years and i feel that if there will be something wrong.. They will know hot to fix it !

Thank you for all you ladies!!

Frankie!! I have a feeling i will be the PRINCESS of dumping after the surgery!!! So will need lots of advise from you!! :) and i am sure if i am the dumper i will learn how to deal with it/avoid it with finding what works and does not work for me.

I am prepared to go with the bypass. Its what the team decided. And i was never against any of the ese two procedures. (I was 100% sure i didnt want band).

After all if my faith is to have the sleeve.. It will happen as there is still a chance they might not be able to do the bypass for some reason! ;) and if this is what is waiting for me! I will make the sleeve work! And hopefully i will have the long term results ;)

I think i was just having a pre op crazy brain wobling and not sure about things that evening i wrote the msg! :)

Thank you once again for your answers :) even though it was not me who started the thread but i an very thankfull you people found some time and replied! ;)

Awwww hun you will be just fine. As time wears on I am finding dumping less of an issue as I have learnt what my body can contend with now. It's become second nature now although there is the rare occasions where something I'm normally ok with will bite me on the bum...thankfullly it is rare. Remember not everyone is a dumper ;)

Wishing you all the best for tomorrow hun yes they know best each team recommends differant things to suit the individual and they know you !let me know how you get on

Thank you so much for all your replies .It gives myself and so many others the advise we need in order to make up our minds .Post oppers are the ones that can give that sound advise as they have the experience . After doing so much research i got a bit side tracked and just looking at most of negatives into bypass esp with the malabsorption issues. I have already said bypass to surgeon and bariatric team so will go with that. I see that even band oppers do well also but i didnt want one of those and have told surgeons I dont want it. I might get a sleeve my surgeon says if when they open me up and cant to bypass we will see. Stacey83 I can understand your reasons for sleeve makes a lot of sense .femfrankie Please tell me how to use the fitness pal I have it but dont understand it at all not good with those sort of things but want to give it another go.

The pre op assesment went fine. My blood pressure was rather low.. But the nurse didnt say there were any problems there what she could see. Now hopping the blood test results will be all fine.

So one more thing done.

Now waiting for the letter and information/instructions from the hospital (about addmission and so..)

And onto pre op diet tomorrow. Good luck for me!! :)

If it makes you feel better Sharona, I had a similar wobble and started to look into the sleeve myself :) I'm pleased I made the choice I did. I went and spoke to my GP about it and he really helped me.

Good luck with the pre-op diet. Don't overly worry about your low blood pressure - I have that too - it's good for them to know so that they can take extra special care of you x
