Carbohydrates

Can anyone tell me what the recommended daily allowance is of carbohydrates for bypass/sleeve patients?

I understand these are to be avoided where possible but certain foods do contain them and you must need a certain amount in order to have a well balanced diet.

Many thanks

Just looked at the sheet I have for bypass. Once you are on 'proper' food they say 2 portions of carbohydrate at least.

One portion is small bowl of cereal, or 1 slice of bread or 2 tbsp cooked rice. Interestingly their sample diet includes 3 portions of carbohydrate.

If your interested the rest is
6 portions protein
2 portions fruit
2 portions vegetables

Interesting thread. What are the sizes of the protein, fruit and veg portions Jane? I'd like to see in advance what my post op diet looks like!

Protein is
1/3 pt milk
1 diet sugar free yoghurt
1 fromaige frais - natural
1 oz meat (pureed for earlier stages)
1oz fish tinned or fillets
2oz soft meat or fish pate
1oz cream cheese
1 oz grated chees
3 tbsp custard no sugar

veg - 100ml tomato juice
1 tbsp veg

fruit
100mls unsweetened fruit juice
1 piece fruit

carbohydrate
as above and
250mls soup any kind
peas, sweetcorn and potato (1 tbsp)

Not sure if what I have been given is standard or not though.

That's what I've been given too. I still struggle to get the carbs, fruit and veg in, even now, 6 months post-op! I tend to rely on milk, cheese and yoghurt for a lot of my protein: with about 1-2 portions of meat or fish per day.
I still can't eat a big banana yet!
and bread - it's just a no-go. I tried some again this morning. The taste and texture made me feel nauseous, and just one or two bites make me feel SO bloated!

On my gumph it suggests trying toasted bread down the line and that untoasted bread will probably be one of the last things to add, so it sounds as though bread can be an issue for lots of people.

While I was typing those figures, I thought to myself there is so little food there and just can't imagine myself eating that little!
