Champagne!

I pretty much gave up alcohol in March 2011 after I became ill. However, on special occasions (such as weddings/my birthday) I may like to have a glass of champagne. Is this a complete no-no post surgery? I know they say no carbonated drinks and I just wondered if anyone had any experience with this? Or if not a full glass can I just have a sip at a wedding to toast the bride and groom? x x

I still enjoy a drink and don't see why you couldnt have asmall one its the bubbles they can give u pain but you could mix with soda or lemonade to eek it out. some providers dont recommend it before 6 months some a year ask at ur nxt app for advice , i am a bypasser so maybe slightly different xx

I was told no fizzy ever :(

I still have fizzy drinks on occassions, I used to drink beer but obviously not now, so i have a vodka and diet coke. You will be ok as long as you're not drinking fizz on a regular basis, enjoy :) x

I was told no fizzy ever :(

I was told the same but of course ignored and tried lemonade last week - I'm 3 months post op and it made me terribly ill for four days, horrendous stomach ache! I won't touch fizzy drinks again but that said my friend tolerates them very well!

I am 5 months post bypass and can only speak for myself but my surgeon said I can have ANYTHING in moderation. Before the forum bores get on my back I am not advocating drinking champagne but .....
I drank champagne on Weds at a very important night out (it was free I had too!) and it was fine. I took the first glass really slow because I was scared, but then a few more glasses slipped down a little too well.
Obv won't make a habit of it, but this was a v special occasion and didn't get any wind pain at all.
Enjoy in moderation xxxx

In the early days i did have the wind pain and it was crippling but have had it since and instead of diet coke in vodka i feel better having diet lemonade wiv wine or vodka, also not keen on champers so would have inch of chamoers n rest diet lemonade dont like soda at all. also made mistake of going out n aving chewing gum that with the coke bloody hell the pain was terrible. much better now no gum n lemonade wiv alcohol. xx

I wonder why lemonade seems better than coke. Less fizz? x x

Fab - thanks guys. There is hope then! I may be able to have a sip or two if nothing else. That's fine. I just didn't want to be having a chestburster John Hurt Alien moment during my friend's wedding - as my new pouch explodes out of my chest! x x :D

No idea, i often try little sip of hubbies fizzy pop the worst fizz is dandelion n burdock, i have had no pain since going onto lemonade mabe coke to acidic? you just have to find what works for you. xx good luck xx

As with so many things each hospital gives different advice and, for each patient, the effects of things can be vastly different.

I am a sleever and am 13 months post surgery. I was given a lot of post op advice that was basically relevent to either bands or bypasses but not really for sleeves because, up to that point, they had not offered sleeves and hadn't written advice that was procedure specific!! In the end the nurse specialist at my hospital said they never tell people NOT to drink as she knows people still will she just asks that people are sensible with what they have and that they behave moderately!!

I tried fizzy water about 3 months post op and could manage it so had it occasionally. Then, in May last year, my nephew and his cousin had their 1st Holy Communion with a huge joint family celebration at the family restaurant - these affairs usually involve free flowing drinks especially cava/champagne and this occasion was no different. As I could tolerate the sparkling water (and had had fizzy soda's on occasions) I tried a glass of champagne which I managed so now I will have a glass or two at a celebration.

You would need to see if you tolerate it or not (try first with sparkling water as it's not going to have anything other than the carbonate in it so you will know if the fizz agrees with you or not!) and then decide if it's worth it for you. Remember as well that, for a lot of post-op patients, their tolerance to alcohol is majorly reduced in comparison to their previous habits!!

I'm a wrapper 5 months post-op. I tried champagne 3 months out and was fine when drinking it. Next day couldn't eat anything except liquid and it lasted for 24 hours and even drinking felt tender. My provider advises anything in moderation, but I'll not be trying fizz again anytime soon! x

I'm 6 months post sleeve and can tolerate champagne well. I had a glass or 2 at home over Xmas... I just sipped slowly at first, but I managed the second at the same 'speed' I'd drink anything (I have everything slower than before). I also don't seem to be affected by the alcohol quicker, as I know some do... Hubby thought I'd be a cheap date, but no! lol

I'm 8 months post op bypass. I had a glass of champagne at Christmas, enjoyed it and didn't suffer more than a few burps. Everyone is different, I will say it went straight to my head. As everyone has said people get told different things, the occasional fizzy drink is something I have even though I know I'm not suppose. I'm trying to give it up again but it's one of my few vices I have left these days and it's tough to be good at everything all the time! If I'm stretching my pouch then it's my own fault. A few tips for fizzy if you do ever have it and it's always best to follow your providers protocol etc. is to stir it and to add ice to it and of course moderation is always best :) Also as you've probably read always take care with alcohol post op as it goes straight to your blood stream and make you a very cheap date so best not to try it for the first time out in public. Might be embarresing :D x

Thanks guys. That's really helpful. As I said I'm almost teetotal these days. It would only be the odd small glass - say 125ml - for a special occasion. And for someone that could drink 1 to 2 bottles of red wine with the girls that's not much for me! But I will trial it out at home first just in case. And take small sips. And the ice tip is good too ;) <hic> x x

I can drink fizz without any problems, so I do occasionally have a diet coke when I go out. I do find that alcohol even very small amounts go straight to my head!!!

im 8 months out now and a few weeks ago i got off my face on voddie and diet coke, i had no problems at all and thoroughly enjoyed myself :D but its not something i would make a habit of. I believe that the sleeve was made so that people could eat and drink normally but in much less amounts, thats what I do x

I had a bad coke addiction prior to my bypass. Have been tempted to have some but I'm avoiding it at all costs. Me and coke can't be trusted together! One can will lead to two, to four and eventually I'll be off the wagon.
