Costs of private psych assessments???

Hi,
I found out today that the waiting list for Psych appointments at the Whittington is 6 months!! AARRGGHH!!! I've decided to look into having the assessment done privately. Has anyone done this in the past, and how much should I expect to pay for this type of assessment? I know each area will be different!! Any advice would be gratefully received!!!

I had to have a private psych assessment last autumn for custody issues with my eldest and I paid £245 in Northamptonshire for it.

Hi Megg, I would have thought knowing that you have follow up appointment in 3 months I would have thought all the test would be carried by then so that Mr Heath can make is final decsion to put you on the list.
Would you not have to see a Pyschologist connected to your case?
All hoops we must jump through hey! We will get there and then look back on all of this.
Hugs xx

Just to say you need to be careful before you commit to any private treatment as part of NHS care.

In some (but not all) cases going part-private is not allowed and actually stops you from having further NHS treatment for the same thing.

I am only aware of this because there was a fair bit of publicity earlier this year about people with cancer or degenerative eye disease who wanted to be prescibed drugs that were not available on the NHS being told that they could not have the drugs prescribed privately and carry on with their NHS treatment.

On the other hand, Roch who posts on here, had her sleep apnoea test done privately with the approval of her NHS specialists.

I would double check before you see any private psych then - even if you can do this you will need to know what level of qualifications they are looking for and the issues that must be covered. It would be awful if you paid money for a psych who covered A, B and C in his report only for you to be told that they needed him to cover X, Y and Z as well

Good luck

Thanks everybody. The psychologist I am going to hopefully see if I do decide to go down the private route is Paul Robinson, so the same person I would be seeing on the NHS. I have checked with Kirsten (Bariatric Nurse at the Whit) and she said it was fine to have the assessment done by him privately. I'm not sure what I'm going to do at the moment. I'm just looking into options as, obviously, I'd rather not pay 2-300 pounds for something I should be able to get on the NHS.

Thank you all for your help!!
