Daily carbs & fat

Can anyone tell me the maximum grams of carbs & fat we should be having daily?

Thanks

Looking on MyFitnessPal suggests 165g of carbs and 40 of fat. I haven't been given a target in terms of grams by the dietician. I'm aiming for 65-70g of protein per day: MyFitnessPal suggests only 45g!
I'm pretty sure I haven't hit the carbs target set by MyFitnessPal once since surgery!

But they suggest more carbs and less protein.
Will you ask the dietician when you see her?
It would be good to know!

That's what has confused me Grace too. I know we only absorb 2/3's of our calories & wondered if its was same for carbs etc.

Honestly my head is ready to explode trying to work it all out! Ha, ha

I'll definitely be asking the questions on the 31st. I'm determined to crack this Grace & make this bypass work for me :)

I suspect its the same for all nutrients. That's why we have to focus so much on the protein and to make sure we have the vitamins etc. Protein is the muscle builder and also essential for a healthy immune system.
Well done for being so determined. Please keep me informed.

I had just over 800 calories today & myfitnesspal.com said my body was in starvation mode so I wouldn't be losing weight.

I'm just trying to get my head round it & I suppose it'll 'click' into place soon.

I only use myfitnesspal for calorie intake and ignore the resy of it. I'm always nearly double on what they say for protein

Very well done this week Jacci... I'm hopeless with working out nutrients too... so maybe a simple list could come out of this, it's hard for me to understand too... you are not on your own... do think it's got to be the best thing you can do Jacci to try and 'crack this', since you have given everything you could to get as far as you are so I'm really pleased you are looking into this... it could be simpler, labels could be clearer and we'd have a head start if there was a useable guide... keep going love, you are doing really well with this.... love and hugs xxx

Its not easy this weightloss malarky is it  I dont think theres been one day that myfitnesspal hasnt said my body is in starvation mode! I mainly use it to work out how much protein Im getting....after that I just have a bit of this and a bit of that :D And yes, thats a technical term ;) XX

Can you believe i didn't know we didn't absorb some of our calories until a few weeks ago? I have to say (and i've torn myself as to should i start doing this) i don't check fat on much - but i do shop wisely and go for the healthier options when possible - i tend to eat whatever the family is having. After years of being on diets and eating different to everyone else it's refreshing (although frustrating) to not worry about two different meals in the evenings...

I'll be interested to see what your team says JMo. I have to say when you posted your food intake the other day i didn't think you were eating much and if my fitnesspal thinks your in starvation mode, god knows what it'd say when you chopped a 1/3 off your cals for the malabsorption side of wls....

Mad when you think for years we are told to eat less, and now it's 'eat more'!

Very good luck at your appt and please keep us posted xx

Myfitnesspal is a really good invention for me... since I really am hopeless and it's been great to see everything in a ratio fashion... I don't think I've put enough emphasis on nutrients in my lifetime and I'm really giving it a go...
the points Grace has made have really made me stop and think this week, thank you Jacci (J Mo) for raising this and this thread has been invaluable.

Do hope you are feeling better today Jacci.

Love to all and hope you are all ok.. love your term 'a bit of this and that' that's just me Jacqui (Dotty).

Haha.. xxx

Thanks everyone. Its not just calories we only absorb 2/3's of but also carbs, fat etc. But I've been told we need to eat approx. 50 carbs per day in order for our bodies to be in ketosis (fat burning mode). Sorry if I teaching my granny to suck eggs, so to speak. But that was the info I was looking for so I could work out what I'm doing wrong.

I've also bought some pi*sy sticks, as I call them. Better known as Ketostix so I know if my body is in Ketosis.

I'll do anything I can to get my head around this bypass so I can work out what I'm doing wrong as I'm now getting to week 7 of NO weight loss :(

Well I didn't know this... so you've already given me a huge amount of info there... we really need to have a full understanding of this don't we Jacci... I'm slow with this type of thing... but I'm prepared to learn with you!

Thanks Jacci and hoping you are soon reaping the benefits of your hard work and commitment...

Love and hugs xxx

So do I Bev, thanks xx

The recommended intake for "normal" people would be 50% of your daily calories come from carbs, 30% from protein and 30% from fats and sugars. The main issue for bypass patients is that we don't (At first anyway) absorb all the nutrients that we consume so we have to increase our protein intake to prevent our bodies robbing our muscles and internal organs of protein for fuel.

I would suggest Jo that you concentrate on getting at least 70g of protein in per day. Make sure your getting at least 1000 to 1200 calories a day with as little fat and sugar as possible, and the rest will take care of itself.

Every NUT and surgeon you speak to will have slightly differing views on it but most of them are fairly consistent on the protein first front

Awww thanks... now this is getting simpler to understand... this is the type of language that I can absorb Karl... a simple way of understanding, remembering and digesting! Thank you.

Jacci (JMo) if we get our heads clearly around this... it's going to be the first time in my life that I've understood nutrition! So many of us probably don't really have all the knowledge necessary and we'll crack it.

I know you still have the issue of not being able to eat enough... keep us posted and keep strong.

Thanks Karl. I'm tearing my hair out never mind losing it 'cos I'm on week 7 of zero weight loss :(

It's not unheard of Jo, are you sure you're eating enough food? less than 900 calories will put you into starvation mode and you'll stop losing as your body tries to hang onto every ounce.

Often just upping your protein intake will trick your body into letting go. Maybe just change what you eat for a day or two, eat a little more maybe. I'm sure it will be fine. Just stop stressing about it because doesn't help either and can halt weight loss.

You have all the time in the world to make it happen and it will happen trust me, it always does in the end. My mate Brooks from the USA lost nothing for ten weeks and thought she was done, then it just kicked off again and she's now below goal, so worry not its not a race xxx
