Diabetic Advice Please

Hi Everyone

I have had the worse unquenchable thirst for the last couple of days...no amount of water will quench it...Throughout the night too.

However, food momentarily halts it, but only for a few minutes.

Ironically I am having blood test tomorrow for diabetes and cholesterol tomorrow morning...but in the mean time what can I do to quench this thirst?...BTW I'm sweating more than I ever have even in cooler places...Could it just be this weather?

My son seems to think that drinking too much water (like I am doing) is dangerous.

All advice will be very much appreciated.

I'm not too sure about diabetic advice but I do know that drinking too much water can be fatal. If you drink too much water within a certain period then you can cause Secondary Drowning. However, this will depend on how much you are drinking and how often. If you are drinking huge amounts in a short space of time then Secondary Drowning is a possibility. If you are constantly thirsty then try to space out your drinking over long periods of time.

I hope that helps a little and doesn't scare you too much!

Hi there Pandora

I was drinking more than a litre per hour yesterday, but today I am pacing it out even though it's hard not to drink.

I thought about taking a 'Resolve' for rehydration purposes but I don't know if it might make matters worse.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi Snow
Do you run to the loo a lot peeing , be tired a lot and drinking a lot you might be type 2 diabetic . I don't know about the sweating I just sweat when its hot but it would run down my face and my spine . Good luck at the Doctors hun . Take care .
Margaret xx

Hi Margaret

Thank you for replying...all the above do seem to apply but I have been tired forever. I am peeing a lot but I thought this was just because of drinking so much.

I feel like a dried out piece of sponge right now....grrr...lol

Thanks again

im type 1 diabetic and have been for 29yrs, unquenchable thirst, peeing constantly, lethargy, irratibility, headaches can all be symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Having said that the weather gives us all these symptoms too, if your having bloods taken tomorrow then await the results rather than worrying yourself silly, if it is diabetes don't panic it can be treated especially with type2 it will go once you lose the weight you want to lose, sadly im stuck continuing on insulin injections but not much now thank goodness. hope this helps xxx

Thank you too Tubbyspud

It is a bit worrying but it could be nothing at all.

I feel like it's one thing after another but there are a lot worse than me out there.

How do get on with the insulin and how did your diabetes affect your Bypass?...

I had a really good bypass, i had to do the milk pre op diet (4pints of milk a day) having diabetes for sooooo long & being on insulin for all that time i have the ability to adjust my insulin according to my blood sugars that i check 4-5 times a day, 3months post bypass now and my insulin intake has reduced dramatically, i feel sooo much better for having the bypass and it has made my life so much better. As for one thing after another post bypass for the first 7 wks no probs but then i had phlebitis which they diagnosed as a blood infection had a dose of antibiotics for no reason then 2 wks after that had a hurrendous urine infection given trimethoprin which turns out allergic too so i was sooo ill for about a week, then given another dose of antibiotics which has finally cleared it up hopefully.lol.. but i feel great all my self esteem and confidence is finally coming back. it will feel like the worlds against you for a while but trust me it's all worth it in the end. xxxx

Wait till you get your blood results back before worrying but if you're going to stress over it ask whoever takes your blood tomorrow to request the results back asap just in case. I hope it turns out alright for you and comes back negative to diebetes.Good luck Snowcrystal.

You have been through the wars, but I'm so pleased you came out the other end ok.

I won't take antibiotics unless I absolutely have to, and I too am allergic to penicillin...(I don't know if trimethoprin is penicillin based)...

Take care

I'm ok, but this thirst is driving me nuts...
I'm just down about possibly developing another condition.
I am not the most patient of people...lol...I'm fasting for 12 hours
and going to try and get to the surgery as early as I can.

The last thing the doc said was he would be looking out for the results.

Thanks again hun.

Hi, yes the symptoms sound like type 2 diabetes but it could just be the weather, be patient and wait for your results. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 8 years ago and had to start injecting recently which was horrible.. I hate needles and it was a big issue for me.
The day after I had my bypass they told me that I would not need to inject again and my tablets cut down to a minimum so don't worry everything will be ok and type 2 diabetes is relatively easy to cope with, generally sensible eating! Keep smiling, Pauline

Thank you Pauline

I am ok with needles, but I have to look away because I don't like the blood...

There seems to be a big difference between type 1 & 2...does type 2 develop into type 1?

Thanks again Pauline

Hi Snow

Diabetes Mellitus

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Diabetes/Pages/Introduction.aspxType 1is caused by the body's failure to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas to help control levels of sugar in the blood. It's sometimes called juvenile diabetes or early-onset diabetes because it usually appears before the age of 40.

Type 2 is caused by the body not producing enough insulin or not using what it produces effectively. It's the most common form and accounts for around 90% of all diabetes.

I have just returned from the hospital for a 4 week check up and they reckon that once I lose more weight I will be able to come off all diabetic medication so there is no need to worry. Let us know how you get on with your results Pauline

Thank you Caz for this, it helps a lot.

I know someone who has type 1 and they have had kidney transplants and the whole nine yards...she is very sick...she is on the mend but it's a long hard road for her still.

I just couldn't grasp the connection between the two.

That's really good news Pauline.

Thank you for letting me know that.

Well I arrived at the doctors surgery around 8.15am this morning armed with bottled water and and a book about the Dalai Lama that my husband bought for me and I had not got around to reading.

I was ready for the 2 hours and 15 minutes or so I thought.

I had the first blood drawn and then had to drink that nasty glucose...and then off I went to find myself a quiet seat somewhere as I definitely was not allowed home....The phlebotomist said that this was because they need to monitor you and in case you become unwell.

The nurse did my BP while I was there as the doctor wanted me to get that checked again...Not a bad reading today as was yesterday.

I tried so hard to read my book but I just could not settle...But I could not concentrate at all...So I was stir crazy for 2 hours and 15 minutes....Then I was called in for the second blood draw...He said the results should be back in a couple of days.
