driving and sleep apnoea

Caren

Love my sleeve!!
Hello, probably a silly question, but if you are diagnosed with sleep apnoea can you still drive?
Thanks :) xxx

Hello my lovely... Are you having tests? Maybe you could ring the DVLA to check. What did the doctor say? :) xx

i phoned and asked to be refered, i saw someone on tv last night with it and i think i may have it lol

Well if you have I suppose it needs diagnosing & while it will help you get your op, don't know about driving. If you couldn't is there maybe an office job with the same company until you get sorted? xxx

I know you will be all right, honey, but really wish you didn't have to struggle at every turn :wave_cry: xxx

My advice to you would be to not ring or inform the DVLA until you have been diagnosed and if necessary on CPAP.

The reason being is they will ask you to stop driving until you have been diagnosed or cleared and they can confirm the results with your consultant.

If you do get diagnosed as having sleep apnoea and become establish on CPAP, you will be asked by your sleep clinic to inform the DVLA and insurance company. At this stage, you can down load a form off the DVLA website, fill it in and send it off to them.

They will check your details and then write to you to confirm you are safe to drive.

If you inform them first, before tests or getting the diagnosis, you may loose your licence until they have done their investigations, which could be 3+ months!!

Keep it to yourself until all the tests and diagnosis has been completed.

HTH :)

Hi Caren,

My dad was diagnosed and tested. He automatically had his driving licence taken (awful as he is a taxi driver). He lost 3 stone and tested again and got it back.

So... Yes! xxx

When i got diagnosed with OSA in July,The first thing they gave me was a leaflet about driving with sleep apnoea.
The Consultant is duty bound to tell you that while you are going through the tests, you should inform the DVLA....Once he / she has done this then it's down to you to tell the DVLA....It just covers the consultant backside should you have an accident whilst driving...On a serious side i read somewhere that a high percentage of crashes were due to people falling asleep at the wheel while having OSA.

I was lucky in a sense because when i got diagnosed with OSA,I got my CPAP the day after so i didn't bother telling the DVLA because while i'm using the CPAP,My treatment is working.

Hope this has helped

Andy xx

I agree with Jen my friend told the DVLA before he was diagnosed and the suspended his licence. 2 months later he had to go through the process of having it reinstated as the tests proved he did not have sleep apnea
