after banding my heads at the same place emotionally wize i still crave bad foods and have to use 100% willpower to be able to not have these, passers say they dont feel hungry or dont want the same bad foods they ate with there old life style, and the physical needs for the old life style isnt there as much.

thats why i have done this thread "wheres your head at" and would like to hear from both bands and bypassers how they have progressed after surgery with there thoughts and feelings towards food.

i cant get my head around how replumbing with a bypass can change the wants for certain foods but a band cant.

thanks for reading

good question Liz. Interested to see the responses you get.

I still get head hunger, and emotional food cravings, and I always will. What the bypass has done for me is prove that these are just in my head, which makes them easier to deal with.

My tastes in food have changed. I don't enjoy the taste and texture of fatty foods anymore, they taste very oily and unpleasant. Also, because you have to chew more with a bypass, a lot of processed food like mince and burgers tastes very bland and boring.

I do enjoy spicy and stronger flavours more, because of the chewing, as the flavour lasts longer. I also find I enjoy more salads than I used to, and will always look to the salads section on a menu first when out (not because I think I should either).

I think that's about all :)

The oddest and most wonderful thing for me is I have gone off chocolate. If I do fancy something sweet, I am tending to go for fruit flavoured things.

I also hate the taste of greasy food or bland food. I like the food I now eat to dance on my taste buds.

I still get hungry, head and physical but 9 times out of 10 I can make a wise choice.

I feel I now have a normal realtionship to food being able to leave things on a plate if I am full, no matter how little I have eaten.

thankyou for your replies, i also prefere foods with amore promanant taste, garlic im loving at the moment and i use quite alot of garlic salt on my salads ect to liven them up.

Am only very early post-op and still fancy 'bad stuff' and food in general even when I know I am physically full.

It's a lifelong of learning that I have to try and unlearn or use willpower to conquer.

I am hoping my tastebuds will change. I know tea doesn't taste the same as it did pre-op!

Caz, I love your 'dancing on the tastebuds' metaphor!

its really strange how things taste different after surgery its like having the toung re wired lol, i shall ask why this happens on my next appointment as its got me baffled

I think his is normal Liz, we are all eating less and eating much healthier options. The tastebuds adapt and new messages are sent tthrough to the brain, that this food tastes good. So when we try something less than perfect for us our brains are going "what is this rubbish?"

I am convinced this is part of the reason and not the surgery itself.

What a brilliant thread, thank you liz for starting this off!!

When I first had the surgery done, I was not hungry at all or interested in food and I naively thought that it would then do it all for me- I wish!! I am now 4 months on, and I have lost 4stone and am on target but it has not been easy...I still find myself turning to 'comfort food' when I am stressed out/in pain/fed up/bored etc etc... red said 'It's a lifelong of learning that I have to try and unlearn or use willpower to conquer' and that is so true. I have got to try and find other ways of dealing with my emotions and pain instead of turning to the foods that I crave when I want a bit of a 'pick me up' and find an alternative- go for a walk, got to the gym, have a bath, listen to music etc etc...- it is hard!! :devilangel:

When I attended weight management classes two years ago we were taught no food is bad and that it was wrong to think it was. I think this has helped me. I never really ate much unhealthy food prior to surgery and anything that I did crave that was not unhealthy ie chocolate at PMT time I have very little desire for now. I think I am extremely lucky, I have no problems with the foods I eat, I have no head hunger, when I eat I am satisfied with what I have had and I have no loose skin. If it was not for the 5 little scars and the feeling full quickly I would think the last few years had been a dream...I was told today I had a petite bum! Never ever thought I would hear those words....I dont think there is anything that I want that I cant have or that is way too unhealthy...I am 100% happy with the stage I am at now...xx

Charlie, thats fab, if you don't mind me asking what op did you have and how much weight have you lost over what period of time. Your very lucky not to have excess skin, doubt I will be soo lucky

What a brilliant thread, I am only just over two weeks post op and am finding that as I have already done four weeks on fluids only that the last two weeks are going to be hell.....

I just want to taste and chew if that makes sense??? I did have a suck on some worcester sauce wheat crunchies today, not eat them just suck the taste off them and when the flavour had gone gave them to the dog!! Ewwww I hear you cry!! LOL but it worked for me.

Since the operation, I can no longer tolerate milk at the moment so Im finding it difficult to say the least but I have been better with the runs so things seem to be settling down now a bit.

I still struggle when family eat chips, etc but I go in the bath or just outside as its been nice recently and that helps the initial cravings. I find its only the "head hunger" that bothers me as proper hunger you dont get at the moment, But im sure I will at some point!

Can't wait to start eating fish and veg, never thought I would get so excited about a bit of baked fish in my life!!!! LOL Hope this helps!!!

Really interesting thread and loved what charliegirl had to say hope I can feel like that All your comments are really helpful and interesting and it would seem the top and bottom is you just have to keep on top of the 'wanting' and be happy with the needing

Love n hugs Jay xx

I had the bypass on 8 November. Did not do the pre op as short notice and my surgeon said it would not be a problem....lost 60 in total gone from size 20 to 14's which are starting to sag around my bum. I have been very lucky with no sagging skin but think this is because I have only been over weight for a few years and it has not been stretched too much, but you never know you may not be as bad as you think. I have another 24 pound to go and have never felt better, folk say confidence radiates out of me which was how I was a few years back....good luck chick just updated your thread about getting your op, it will change your life for the better...xx

Prior to surgery I stopped doing much socialising or even going to the shops etc. Since the weight has started to come off I have found other things to do than sit in and eat. Previously I would plan on buying nice healthy foods to eat but would eat loads of it. Now I plan on my next night out, buying new clothes, doing up my house with my new found energy and its amazing how it detracts from wanting food. I am a great book worm and if in the book the charactor was eating I would want to eat now I am happy with my book and a brew....it truely is a life changing op and I hope you all get to feel the way I do..xx:D

Thanks for sharing that, was that the idea of your surgeon or did you just do it yourself?
