Atleast 6 weeks, and then check with your team. Most places do a 6-8 week check up and will give you the nod then. It's very important you allow the muscles to heal properly first. You can exercise before then, but get proper advice from a qualified instructor about what to avoid to prevent using your abdominals. Swimming is always a good bet once your wounds are healed.
Thats a great question!
If I can jump on your thread and ask a related one - my hubby is 3 weeks post op and talking about rejoining the gym (not that he was a regular before lol!)
I'm concerned that its too soon so I'm trying to convince him that he should just be walking for a few more weeks.
Any thoughts anyone?
Yup best to take things slowly and start off with gentle exercise like Maz says walking and swimming are your best bet until after 6 weeks.
Most people want to exercise at this stage, you're full of motivation and determination at this stage so it is important to harnass it and put it into mild exercise rather than waste it and watch it turn to lethargy. Other gentle forms like tai chi and pilates are great for building up your core strength which is vital to prevent back pain with weight loss but again after 6 weeks and talk to the instructor.
Gyms are brilliant for having access to qualified trainers who can set up a plan to help you with your core muscles and regaining general strength and stamina, but can be intimidating for large people. Many council centres have great facilities with trainers but without the lengthy contracts and status gym bunnies!
Thanks.
It would be joining the local council gym, only £17.50 a month so I may well join with him to help myself before my surgery (although I usually get really bored with the gym). He said it'd only the the treadmill and bike at first.
He was told not to swim for at least 6 weeks as it stretches your stomach muscles too much while you're healing.
