Feeling desperate and down, need help

:cry:I just don't know what else to do anymore. I had my op on April 19th 7 weeks ago and until now have only lost 4lb. I lost nothing at all for the first 5 weeks, 3lb on week 6 and only 1lb this week. i am at my wits end. What on earth am I doing wrong. I feel no restriction at all though on the other side of the coin I do not feel hungry. I have felt fabulous since the op with no problems whatsoever, even my scars were practically invisible after two weeks. I have found I can eat any food I have tried with no dumping or feeling ill. In fact wonder if the op was carried out at all. I am seeing the surgeon on Tuesday for my follow up appointment and I am sure that will make me feel even more demoralised as I expect he would have expected a great loss as well. I never eat below 800 calories a day and never ever go 1 calorie above 1000 am I eating too much? I eat between 80g and 100+ g of protein per day and eat between 70g and 90g of unrefined carbs per day. I have 3 litres of water a day. I have swam everyday from week 2 and do aquafit once per week.

this is a typical days menu

You are doing perfectly well!Your tum hasnt settled yet,you are still healing inside and your body is in starvation mode.Once everything settles you will see the weight come off.I was exactly the same, they should explain at the hospital that it doesnt just fall off cos we are not eating like we used to.Promise it will happen.Im 15 weeks today and have lost just on 4st!My op was 21st feb.Maz x

Give yourself some time - I was in hospital for a month after my bypass and I actually GAINED 55lbs - but 1 year 8 months on I have lost 10 stone - all our journeys are different but a guarentee is that you will lose weight. Explain how you are feeling to your dietitian and take their advice. Good luck and keep smiling cause it will work xxx

I didn't lose as quickly right away as I expected to either. One of the "issues" with this whole thing is it's so easy to try and compare our progress to one another but even with the same surgery, we all lose differently and at different rates. You are doing great with your eating though. Your stats are impressive and if you keep it up, you WILL lose.

Hang in there it will come... sometimes it starts off slow. Keep us updated. I bet in a month you will be telling us how much u lost and how great you are feeling...

Hi Colopatiron, I cant offer any real words of wisdom as im pre-op but i also do the aqua-fit classes and i know they are very strenuous, so right now im sure you are doing everything possible by helping your body tone up. Im so sorry to hear you so down, and very pleased it isnt long before your next appt. Let us know what they say, and how you get on from now on. Good luck hun & hang in there...........

Thanks everyone, I am seeing the surgeon tomorrow so hopefully will have some answers. I did ask if I could have a copy of my op on DVD when the surgeon came round the morning after my op he said the film of it was on his laptop and he would put it on a disc for me so I am hoping he has done it and I will be able to have it tomorrow. I think its the only way I will actually believe I have had the bypass. My biggest worry is the lack of feeling of restriction. At the moment I am stopping eating because I know that is all I am supposed to eat but sadly my willpower never lasts which is the reason I wanted the op in the first place. After a 2 year battle to get the op I am just wondering if it was worth it when I would have lost more weight going to a regular slimming club. Sorry to sound so miserable and ungrateful, because believe me I am sooo grateful for the gift of the op and the chance of a life and not just an existance I promised myself after the op I would give this 200 percent effort which I can say hand on heart that I have done but just feeling really down with the lack of weight loss. Thanks again everyone I will perservere on for another month or two and see what happens.

Hi hun
I can't offer any words of wisdom as my ops not til next week but I can offer words of support.
I hope you get some answers tomorrow from your surgeon to put your mind at rest.
I agree, I'd feel disappointed if my weight loss was slow, but like the others who've been through it have said it's soon jump into action and the weight will start dropping off.
Give us an update tomorrow after you've seen your surgeon, Id be interested to hear what they say/explain to you.
Take care

Oh Hun, I empathise so much with your mood I may be pre-op so of no use for helpful advice and words of wisdom, only heart felt sympsthy and wishing I could wave a magic wand to make you feel better about yourself and the world in general. I think the advice from those who have the experience is briliant and with luck today your surgeon can reassure you about whats going on for you we are all different and all react to things differently so why shouldn't our stomachs be the same. Hope all goes well and you get the reassurance you need.

i actually rmember gaining weight after my op for a while as they fill you so full of air and whatnot.
so if you think, you first have to lose that and then once you body gets over the shock of it all you will start to see the results of it.

Chin up :) and best of luck xx

Hi Sue
One thing is for certain ~ the weight loss will come. I suspect if you were to analyse your body you now have less fat and more muscle (which as we know weighs more than fat) . . . your diet sounds very reasonable but maybe ditch the egg yolk (once you get you hear around it '2 chicks pasteurised egg whites' are fine). Are you drinking too much water . . . ? 3ltr seems high; I understood that we should look at 2ltr. Your diet and exercise regime are a credit to you . . . When you look back in 12/18 months time and you have achieved your desired weight loss (and the guys won’t leave you alone!) you may be glad it was a gradual controlled loss. Take care and chin up xx

Hi all, I have seen the surgeon today. He wasn't at all surprised about my weight loss or should I say lack of it. He says it happens all the time, patients sometimes feel so well after the op but the reality is there is still mega healing to do inside. He has assurred me my pouch is of standard size and that in fact he has taken out an extra long length of intestine (distal?)and supposedly when the weight starts moving it will move very well. He is not worried so much about the lack of restriction, because as I feel no hunger he feels I will be able to keep on the straight and narrow and control it, that worries me a bit as if I'm really truthfull before the op was I ever truly hungry when I ate before. He has looked over my food intake diaries and exercise charts and is very pleased with what I am eating and what exercise I do. I feel a lot more reassurred and it has given me hope to carry on. I have to see him again in 4/5 weeks so hopefully the weight will have started moving by then. Thank you all so much for your comments and support you are a fab lot huge hugs. Going to have my favourite dinner now, a small sweet potato and cottage cheese yum thank you again

Yay! So glad to hear your surgeon was able to ease your concerns. As far as restriction goes, in the beginning I felt none myself either. A lot of that was due to the fact that I was initially VERY small portions (per surgeons orders). As my portion sizes increased, so did my restriction. I still don't have the restriction I know others feel but I do know when I have pushed my limits. I don't vomit like some do, I just feel it. Have faith and I bet you will be pleasantly surprised. You are doing such an awesome job and I promise you will reap the benefits of the surgery and all your hard work soon. Can't wait to hear about it when you do!

Glad you got a good explanation from your surgeon and he's put your mind at rest.
keep us updated on your weight loss progress.
Take care
