Feeling pretty sick

Hi I am now 3 weeks post op and starting to eat sloppy/soft food but simply can not stomach anything. From my story so far you'll remember I recovered really quicky after the op, off painkillers within 2 days and back at work after 7. I felt great, however for the last 5 days I seem to have come down to earth with a massive bump and constantly feel sick and dehydrated. I am drinking about 1.5L per day plus tea/coffee and milk. I can only force down maybe a table spoon of food and have probably only had 2 - 300 calories a day, sometimes less for the last week or so. Am I feeling sick cos I'm not eating enough? How much water are you fellow bypassers drinking a day? I'm waiting for my weekly call from H/weight and will ask them too but just wondered if I am alone in how I am feeling at the moment. Thanks x

OOh sorry to hear you are feeling icky - I'm afraid I can't give you any post-op advice other than to speak to the specialists - but it does not sound to me like you are putting enough calories or nutrients in your body! I am surprised you are not asleep all of the time!

Some of the guru's will be along shortly to give you some sound advise -best of luck!

Hi there, I am a bander but it sounds like your calorie intake is waaaaaay tooooo low, and that is why you feel so bad.

Can you stomach slimfast? Or similar?

As this will give you the correct nutrition each day and give you some energy. As it is a meal replacement and gives about 220 cals, if you can get 3 of these in, it might help.

No one can function properly on that amount of calories.

Also I think you may have pushed yourself too far, just because you had no pain doesn't mean you are good to go. Most people are still in recovery stages at 3 weeks, and with no fuel in the engine this is being increased. Also tea and coffee will dehydrate you further if you are already dehydrated.

I hope you feel better soon, I think a phone call to your provider is needed, to explain what is going on and get some help.

Hi

I was exactly the same, great first week food fine, then couldn't stomach anyhing, wasn't sick but just hated everything and so tired slept 20 hours a day. Actually lived on a couple of plain biscuits now and again. I just rode it out, trying to keep my fluids up and struggled some soup down. It should pass, I was better after the 4 week point. Just keep trying things until something appeals/you can get it down. Even though I had keyhole bypass I couldn't get back to work for 6 weeks which made me feel a total failure but I just needed to go with how I felt.

I hope you feel better soon, a protein shake may slip down if you have any.

Take care

M

Thanks guys, I've tried all the shakes in boots including slim fast but dumped on all of them. I'm going to have to order some healthier weight shakes I think, same ones I had on my pre op diet. I take it protien shakes are best bought at health food store?

I am so sorry. I hope they can find you something you can eat that will give you some more calories.

Be careful though, Lou - some of the protein shakes are for men trying top build body mass and contain sugar. Ask specifically for very low carb ones. Phatgirl is the Protein Queen here and has some good advice. There is a thread re protein supplements and she recommends quite a few. I'll try to find it. Back in a sec....don't go away......

Sorry you are having a tough time, hopefully that will pass soon. You are still early days and your body is still understress from your surgery. You definately need to eat more, eating so little is a risk to your health and the healing process, please give your team a call to see what they advise.

Thanks everyone, spoke to heather weight today and they were really helpful (as you have all been), said I had got myself into a bit of a vicious circle, feeling sick as I'm not eating much and then feel sick when I do eat as body gets a sudden rush of energy its been longing for! So solution is get pissed, woops sorry that was my old solution to everything :D what I meant to say was for next few days to get over sickness is to eat small amounts every 2 hours. Then once sickness has passed try and increase calorie intake to 400 by next week, and the a few hundred a week until I am at around 1200. So I have managed 3 meals today, 1/2 weatabix, small pot of tuna and mayo and mashed salmon steak (small) for tea. It's funny isn't it, before I would not have touched fish unless it was wrapped in batter and as far as breakfast goes, I could demolish 3 weatabix without it touching the sides! - Thanks for the advice on the shakes, going to get some tomorrow. So compared to yesterday, feel very positive thanks to you all. (apart from the fact I've got a stinking cold and everyone thinks I've got swine flu)
Thanks again for your words of advice and support x x
