First things to consume after op

louisaL

looking to make a change!
I'm hopefully being discharge today but with the few sips of water they've allowed me to have I'm even worried about that and how much I can handle at one time.
How much in say mils were you able to drink with in half an hour?

For when I go home I've got muller yoghurt and soup but I will see how I get on with that when I get home

My hospital said 200ml. I could have managed more at times.

Good luck chick :) hope you see recovering well xxx

Thanks for the reply Sophie typical just as I wrote it a doctor came round and told me it was 20mls and said just keep drinking when I felt full as I was worried I wouldn't and I would just bring it back up again lol

I'm glad you've asked this question as now I'm home I'm struggling big time with getting anything other than sips of water in.

My insides are so so sore and extremely gurgly I don't even want to take my co-codomol and I need that for my fibromyalgia pain as well as my sore insides. I managed an actimel drink yesterday and a little bit of a highlights drink over and above water and I was suffering big time all day. My upbeatness of yesterday has disappeared and I'm in tears. I have taken my meds (fast tab too) and have an actimel in front of me but my stomach is hurting so much that I'm too scared to open it. I'm going to put a call into my team this morning but just want a bit of reassurance as I did only have my op on Monday. Hate feeling like this.

Sorry to add on to your thread louisal. Hope you are feeling okay and are looking forward to going home.

Glad you're going home - take it easy x

21 hrs post op I started on 30 mls every half hour, then upped quickly to 60 ml and then on free fluids. Advice was 200 - 250 mls for drink, soup dependant on consistency. I didnt get enough calories in and four days post op kept feeling faint, so now have milky drink or yoghurt drink 3x day (virtually 6 meals).
It is difficult making sure you drink plenty. Louise you will soon get the hang of it & Nelly I hope you feel much better soon. xx

I am 2 weeks since my bypass, for the first 4 days I was only able to sip a couple of teaspoons of clear soup and water. Then moved onto different foods eating a little more each day. I am now 2 weeks but I am still only eating very small amount. I have good days and bad days where I was unable to do much or move much so I would get very frustrated. After about 1 week the pain started to subside and I was not depending so much on my meds. I seemed to sleep for the first 4 days once I had got comfortable. It does not last forever and now I feel fantastic especially losing 37Ibs.

Thanks for replies and nelliephant you post away we're all in this together! I completely understand what you mean though any thought of eating or drinking is turning stomach and I gagged when DH cooked his tea last night.
I'm so confused about the mls as we've got a 20ml pouch yet your saying 30mls every half hour I know the 20 won't stay in there but don't know how long it takes to go through leaving space for a bit more.

Nellypant, I suffer from fibromyalgia & osteoarthritis & for years have taken prescription paracetamol & ibruprofen I still need to admittedly much less than I did but there are days when I need to still. In light of that my prescription for ranitadine I'd been taking pre-op with mebeverine for IBS (which I still take in smaller doses) to protect my stomach from reacting with the painkillers & mebeverine post op it was felt I should have omeprazole to replace the ranitadine so I'd query things with your team or GP to ensure you can take those painkillers safely without having to deal with post-op & joint pains without them.
