Yep- I can't take diet coke- its just too fizzy. It feels wierd....but I can drink champagne easily if I get rid of some of the fizz out of it! I think its all about if you can burp up the excess gas or not and that depends on how tight my band is. I can't burp after a fill (too tight) but it eases off after a couple of days and then I can burp again!
Some people say it can cause band slippage but again, I feel it depends on how tight your band is. This just my opinion though and others feel differently.
This was really helpful to read! Diet Coke is the thing I am going to miss most as I drank loads of it pre op 3 weeks post op now and I have some really hard days where I crave it loads but hopefully once I start to lose weight I won't car any more! X
I asked my dietician this question the other week. She said it is ok to have fizzy on the rare occasion but a) try and get most bubbles out as you will be burping and have shoulder pain and most importantly b) the stuff that makes it fizz actually corrodes the silicon in the band ( it is used to hold the liquid in for the fills). So if you have fizzy too often you are risking the life of your band so I am trying to stay away from it as much as possible.
I had a serious fizzy drink addiction before my band, but I was told NEVER to drink fizzy drinks with a band and I haven't. I don't miss coke at all which is amazing considering how much of the stuff I used to drink. Personally I think if the experts say don't, then they know what they're talking about!
I used to drink a lot of diet coke in my former life I.e. pre-band....I think it used to make me feel full by expanding my stomach but I honestly couldn't drink one now.. I don't think it would go through..too much fizz. But I had a glass of champagne today & I took it slowly & sipped & it was fine. I guess its about being careful if you want to.
& carbon dioxide can't corode your band as it won't ever touch it. Silicone is one of the most non reactive substances there is...that's why they use it for any type of implant.

We are all going to have had varying advice but should always follow what we have been told.
For me thats that fizzy drinks with ice added and stirred are fine. I dont drink coke etc but have the odd soda water with lime and vodka and slimline with no problems - but that is just me
