Funding N. Ireland

Just wondering if anyone got funded in NI? I'm seeing my GP in 2 weeks with a view to asking him for a referral. Has bariatric surgery ceased altogether in NI? What do you think my chances are? Hope someone on this site can help. I'm hoping for a gastric band. BMI currently 42 :(

HI
I am in N.Ireland and was extremely fortunate to get funding for a bypass. There was a project carried out over the last year or so where 50 people were flown to birmingham heartlands hospital for surgery.
I have a funny feeling that its not available anymore but ur GP may have more info.
If its not available u will prob find it very hard to get funding cos there is no theatre set up here for the surgery. There is a surgeon - Barry Clements -I was referred to him over 3yrs ago and am yet to have an appt - think the waiting list is miles long.

What you may also find is that your GP will refer u to a weight mgt clinic - thats what mine did.

I wish you all the best of luck
xx

I remember someone flying over from Ireland to have surgery at heartlands hospital birmingham but not sure if she was from the north or south! i'm sure someone will know i just didnt like to read and not comment..Good luck with your gp x

yep it was me lmao - best thing i ever did

Hi Tink, (and Kelly!)

Yes, sadly that's what I thought. I work in the Royal and I heard that we no longer do the surgery... :( Might have a look at the private option. Terrified to think how much it'll cost though. I thought I might've been able to work a few extra shifts, but staffing has been cut too (although management vehemently denies this!). Right. Will just have to surf this site for other options. Thank you so much for your response, and I'm really glad it's working for you. xo

there is a lady on here called maura from N.Ireland. She went to belgium for a band -she might be able to give you more information
