Gaping wounds

I had my staples removed this morning but 2 of my wounds are now gaping a little, one of them is weeping slightly. Is this normal? I have put plasters over them to try and seal the wound and looks like its done the job. Has anyone else had this?

Just make sure they are kept covered they will be ok!

Suggest you use hydrocolloid dressings. These are semi-permeable, i.e. they let air in but keep water out. They allow the wound to repair from the bottom up which stops the wound scabbing over and should reduce the chance of scarring. You should be able to purchase these from any reputable chemists.

Steri strips from the chemists to pull the edges together and cover with a plaster or dressing until it knits again. But a quick chat with the hospital or your GP surgery to be sure.

you poor love, hope it's ok. I feel so lucky that they glued mine. I was surprised to learn that. I was asking the nurse when i had to come back and have my stitches removed lol. She told me the glue they use is £200.00 a little tube.....can't believe it can you x

Mine were all glued apart from the drain port, which got slightly infected and I had to keep changing the dressings and also had antibiotics.

If your concerned at all, phone your team, or visit your doctors in the morning.

Ive used plasters to close up the gaps and it looks ok but will see how they look in the morning. Thanks everyone x

Hi Mandy.

My wounds gaped too.

I cleaned with cooled boiled water and TCP, then applied steri strips and a clean dressing. Then I left them absolutely alone for three days to dry up.

They have all healed beautifully now. However if you do not feel confident doing this yourself, then please do see your practice nurse.

I went to my local walk in centre this morning as I was panicking. Anyway the wounds are fine but the nurse did put steri strips on and new breathable/waterproof dressing over. I have to leave them for another 5 days.

My wound took a few weeks to heal. It was glued but it ended up open and weepy. The doctor gave me anti-biotics and eventually it healed.
I found it's best to keep it uncovered and let the air dry it, except when showering of course.
Because I kept mine covered for a while, it stayed moist which delayed the healing process.

peace of mind is always good to have mandy, hope it heals soon x
