gastric sleeve options?

i was wondering do the NHS do gastic sleeve as a stand alone operation or is it always done as first stage operation?

im at the point where im seriously considering bariatric surgery

i goggled it but from what i read am thinking it may not be a first opption to them compared to the band or bypass i could be wrong tho x

I'm getting the sleeve on nhs as a stand alone operation as I wasn't very keen on a bypass. my surgeon said he'd recommend the sleeve any day of the week especially to someone who's young and relatively still quite fit, but who can curb snacking which I've pretty much managed to do. I'm really looking forward to getting it! x

Hi
It is being used as a stand alone op as the success rate of losing the excess weight is really good. Im doing really well with my sleeve, wish id had it done years ago!!

Ditto stand alone sleeve. My urge on I now pro sleeve in favour of bypass as results are very similar & doesn't have such drastic nutritional issues. 5 1/2 stones in 5 months for me. Loving my sleeve. Please research all your options thoroughly & tie surgeons advice before making your decision. We are all individuals with different problems.

thats good to know as im not keen on the bypass, i know the band wouldnt work for me

i know a girl who had the sleeve done and shes doing amazingly well infact she now is doing heavy exercise, i cant even walk to the front door without being in a huge amount of pain

I was in severe back pain with dangerously high blood pressure. I was loosing my mobility. I now run upstairs, walk, run & swim 3 times a week. New lease of life. I initially wanted a band but surgeon said it wouldn't work for me longer term. I too wasn't keen on the bypass due to longtime nutritional issues. My surgeon recommended sleeve. I was in hopital for just 2 days, honestly no pain & harly any scarring now. I did have allergy complications but
I am very allergic even pre op. did end up having a stretch but painless. I am never hungry but find a lot of foods difficult, mainly due to my allergies but coping well. Jut been out for a meal & fine albeit a very small portion & pls helped me out by eating mine too. LOL enjoyed myself.

what was yor blood pressure if you dont mind me asking

my gp tells me mines probebly fine even thou it consistantly sits now at 185/120ish

Same as many others - my sleeve's a stand alone op and I love it. Lost 1st 4lbs in 5 weeks (incl. 4 days of pre-op). The op itself leaves you with no pain, but the wind is a side effect that can be agony, though this is the same with other bariatric ops. I have only had difficulty with fish, but only 5 weeks since my op, so can be expected. Apart from that I can eat most things I try and am learning what the different feelings mean. I am soo looking forward to my future with my sleeve...
I do agree with Bellydancer though, you need to research as much as you can and follow the advice from your surgeon, thay know best!
Good luck!

my check list so far is based on rep of the surgon and hospital then going on how i feel once i talk to the the dr... should i be reseaching for more??

Mine was 210 over 120. Now perfectly normal & off all medication.

i thought i knew all i had to know but now i feel clueless lol

I read everything. Available on the Internet, weight loss surgery for dummies , surgeons websites, watched videos of ops uuuurgh! Made sure
I fully understood difference between surgery options, pros & cons of each. What can happen if it goes wrong.

Iv been looking for stories of gastric sleeves gone wrong, so far I havent come across any deaths just a few close calls.. I know it's not gonna be a bed of roses. So I do want to be prepared for the what if's :( x

I chose sleeve over bypass, because of the fewer common side effects, and because of the fewer nutritional problems. All ops come with a risk so I didn't look at that so much as the long term differences. I didn't want a band so looked at the other 2 and sleeve won for me. That doesn't mean it's the best choice for everyone. Try to research the whole thing, rather than looking for horror stories, because you will find them and it'll just worry you more.
Good luck

If you're going for NHS it will depend what your area offers, ours was bypass or band. My surgeon told me the mortality rates on bypass are constantly improving and are close to those on bands now. But statistic are based on the past figures still and bypass has a longer history. So please be reassured if this is an option you go for it won't be as bad as you think. F course there are still the nutritional problems

I had my sleeve as a stand alone procedure x

You'll find people who have had a bypass love it and vice versa with the sleeve and band. Your the one who has to live with it, and theres no reason for it not to work as long as you follow the rules.
It will turn out to be one of your most important decisions in life so just carry on researching.

He is my hero. He is fantastic at what he does. He is world renowned & he has done tremendous research. He is director of the Bariatric unit at Homerton Hospital & Royal London. He also sits at a couple of private hospitals? Initially I researched him privately but my GP refered me via the NHS & he did my op. I had to wait a year from referral from GP to op. I got funding from City & East London PCT very quickly. His team at Homerton are also amazing. Apart from the wait I couldn't have had better. If you can afford it I would say go private coz of the waiting list & that you want to have a baby. If not try via the NHS. Feel free to ask me further questions. On 16 Aug 6.30 there is a support group meeting with some of the team at Homerton for pre op & post op. I'm sure they would welcome you.
