Grey Peas & Bacon

JayHobbs

Slowly Shrinking
As I am a Black Country lassy one of my favourite foods is grey peas & bacon.

It has been a great dish for me post-op and I eat a small dish every other day.

Its LOW fat and HIGH in protien. :D :D
Only side effect is trumpy-pumps, but I get that a lot since my op anyways,,,lol..

It also freezes well.

In some parts of the country the grey peas are called MAPLE PEAS and are sold as pigeon food or fishing bait. (my mom who lives up north has to buy hers from a pet shop,,,:D )

Most health food shops sell them too.

500g of dried grey peas
500g of chopped bacon
75g of pearl barley
1 chopped onion
oil or spray for frying
teaspoon bicarb of soda
pepper (but salt is optional as there is loads in bacon)
oxo cube (not necessary, my addition only but well worth it)

Soak peas and pearl barley in water and bicarb of soda overnight, drain and wash several times.

Add about 500 ml of water to a large saucepan and bring to boil.
add oxo cube (optional).
Add your peas and barley, top up water if needed to cover peas by 1inch.
Simmer for about four hours but keep topping up water. (I sometimes simmer them for 6-8 hours or cook on low in a slow cooker)

About half hour before serving: In a large pan, fry bacon and onion in a little oil or spray.
When browned, drain bacon/onion on a kitchen towel to drain off any fat/oil and add to grey peas.

Simmer for a further half hour and serve.

This will make at least six generous bowl fulls. (12-16 portions for us bypassers)

Thank you very much for this.

I know I get 'stuck' eating the same things so great to get ideas x

I'm also bored with the things I can eat. This reminds me of how much I like lentils and barley, butterbeans and all things in pulses cupboard. I hadn't thought of using them because of their high carb count.
What does everybody think?
Ohhh for some home made chicken soup thick with barley and vegies.

I have lived all my life apart from when I was away studying in the black country and have never had this - but heard of it:D.

Sounds very tasty.

Lynne, Yes they have carbs - but less than baked beans,(about a 5th less) and NO sugar.

So I figured they would be better than baked beans ???
I was getting a bit bored of baked beans:cry:
