its not put me off having my opp if it all falls out ill get a wig lol x

Hiya, a few people have mentioned hair loss.. but i think its just temperary and doesnt happen to everyone, also not everyone will lose lots of hair.
I was told when we first start eating healthily out hair folucles double, then after a while the extra hair falls out... similar to when you are pregnant.
But i am unsure... i have very long hair and i always have lots of hair on my hair brush.. and that has always been the case for years.. im 8 weeks post op and i havnt had any hair issues other than..i think it needs a good cut as i have a few split ends where i have neglected it a bit.
Someone more experienced will come along soon hun xx

thanks hun think im just worrie about every little thing now my opp is only 2 weeeks away so just thinking of everything its doing my head in not even sleeping really coz im thinking all night long lol x

I have had a lot of hair loss.
It isn't permanent. It grows back and obviously the re-growth isn't immediately noticable because it is fine. You will find that even as your hair is falling new hair is growing back straight away so it is like a constant renewal. I am ten months post op and I still lose a lot of hair when brushing and washing my hair.
Dont worry about it. It will sort itself out in the end.
It isnt as drastic as hair loss through chemo. I lost all of the hair from my body and 3/4 of the hair from my head during chemo so try not to be concerned, it is nothing like as bad as any chemo you may have had in the past.

Sammy: protein, protein, protein !!!

It is because with the RNY bypass that food intake is so limited in the first few weeks after surgery, and the body will not be absorbing all of what you take in, that bypassers are advised to eat 80 g of protein a day. **

** This will be very difficult in the first few weeks of liquid and puree food, but possibly try to get yourself a good protein shake that you can add in to your liquid consumption.

It is because of malabsorption with the RNY (average is approx 50% malabsorption) that bypassers need TWICE (80g) the amount of protein that a non bariatric patient would (40g a day).

If you consume enough protein your hair and nails should be fine, and you will minimise any potential hair loss.

what would you say i should get then for the protien see no one has told me anything about boasting my protein tell me what to get and ill get it lol thats why these sites are so so helpful !!!

Sammy,

I have not looked into protein shakes myself yet (I am having a sleeve not an RNY and still awaiting my op date), but I am sure you can search the threads (especially the RNY threads) for suggestions ..... or some other RNY bypassers will pop along soon no doubt with some ideas.

I cant, speaking from personal experience, agree with the protein theory because I eat an amazing amount of protein and still lose hair and my nails split and rip for the slightest reason.
The theory in the information may be correct but for me it isn't founded.
I'm not suggesting for one min that protein, lots of protein, isnt necessary, it is, but I dont think that it is THE thing that stops hair loss and nail renewal. There is a suppliment that you can take which does help, but unfortunately I can't bring the name to mind at the moment.
We have done a post on it in the past. If I remember I will post it here.

The loss is akin to the loss we women experience after child birth it's mainly hormone driven combined with our bodies reaction to our op & new eating regime. Ensuring your zinc levels are good can reduce the loss a bit but if it's going to fall out it will but it does grow back. Mine started almost immediately post surgery & at 6+ mths post op it's slowing nicely others haven't started losing until 3-4mths post op, it depends on who you are & how your body reacts.

Zinc, thats it.... thank you Penelope. I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was. I can go to bed without it being on my mind now lol.

hi

zinc and selenium - also mine started straight away and has just stopped now (7months post op) its growing back canny, i have lions main lol but im delighted with the weight loss (6stone) and its very worth it. i was very upset with the loss but for some its part of the journey xx

Mrs safc I agree it's not as bad as it seems I think as out eating progresses & improves it all helps together with the extra zinc etc as well as time giving our bodies a chance to recover & adapt.
