Hair loss!!!!

I'm 3 and a half month post op from gastric sleeve and I'm losing so much hair!! Every time I brush my hair I have a handful come out! Anyone have this problem too? What can I take to thicken my hair now ?? Please help me!!!!

Although I had a bypass, a lot of people had the same thing about the same time after both types of op - it should be only temporary and hopefully by about 6-9 months after surgery you will find its back, maybe even thicker than it was before! Plenty of protein will help, along with a lot of patience!

Fear not-it will return. Mines coming back ( 9 months post op) - thank goodness !

I'm afraid there little we can do to prevent it or help, just keep up protein.
I had selenium and zinc on prescription, and also bought perfectil .
And the hair liquid alpecin(exspensive)
And I didn't notice any difference.

Hi Becky

I'm so sorry you are losing such a lot of hair. I know it must be stressful, but I have read that it can be a side effect of any surgery and not just WLS. It'll stop eventually, in the meantime try to stay calm and dress your hair up if you can to hide any thin patches. There are loads of good hair pieces around at the moment. Have a chat with your hairdresser to see what they could recommend.

Check out YouTube - 'hair loss after weight loss surgery' - There's loads of stuff on there to put your mind at ease. Just in case you don't see the vid I saw, one surgeon says it typically starts around 3-7 months after WLS and is not total but can create a few thin patches. Proper nutrition can help decrease hair loss but wont prevent it. Try to keep hydrated, take 60-70g protein and take supplements. By 12-18 months your hair should be back to normal.

Take care, Tessy..x

I'm just a month post op and i don't know why, but i'm losing a hell lot of hair. I just got scared yesterday while taking a shower a handful of hair came out. I don't know what to do now :(

I've used VLCDs on and off since 2005  & i've finally had a bypass now.
The first time i did a VLCD my hair was lovely and thick but then i lost loads of hair & it's never grown back properly
I did another vlcd last year & my hair loss was so bad that i could see my skull & it looked really bad. My hair still hasn't grown back so is already really thin so i'm dreading losing any hair at all.

hello ladies, hair loss.........as distresing as it seems, its actually a good thing, (note i'm no doctor) i am almost 8 months post rny my hair loss was as dramatic as my weight loss, the plug hole took a battering every time i washed my hair and the hoover couldn't keep up with it either, my husband woke up with my hair on his beard and on occasions between his toes, my brushes had turned into hair ballls and every time i went out one friend or another was picking the hair of my clothing from my back, i found it upsetting so contacted the clinic where i was advised that there hair loss is due to the body diverting attention from your non important body accsesory's like hair, nails, skin etc to concentrate on healing and keeping your vital organs in check during the transition stage of learing to eat properly, my only advice is keep taking your multi-vitamins regular and dont over wash your hair......that greesey stuff that every one goes errrr at is actually protecting your hair too, natrual oils help to coat it, also dont brush your hair when its wet as this causes streching and then breaks x i hope this helps somewhat, all the best xx

Something I'd like to add maybe help someone..
There's brushes you can buy from boots called tangle teezer, they are fantastic for brushing hair without stretching.
My hairloss has stopped but I use this brush still and it helped at the loss stage x

I use that brush for my youngest son after seeing it on Dragons Den. I ordered mine off Amazon. My mom tried it and loved it so got a purple one from boots. They are fantastic :)

My sister is a hair extension specialist and used to do a lot of work with wigs & hairpieces for cancer patients and alopecia sufferers.
She's keeping a keen eye on my hair and it hasn't started to thin yet.
I have been advised that I'm better off spending money on hairpieces that will hide any loss than on lotions and potions to prevent it falling out because it will regardless.
Worst case scenario there are some fantastic hairpieces and we could always see it as an opportunity to trial new looks for when we're slim!!
xx

I will go the hair piece route. I am accustomed to them anyway. So no one will bat an eyelid lol

I posted this elsewhere, but may be of interest...
I find this subject really interesting and when I did Atkins and later Lighter Life, this was something I researched a lot, i was told it was a side effect of ketosis. At the time it was considered that as you reduced carbs the body used fat stores to create ketones as an alternative energy source, thus the body went onto defence mode and stopped or slowed down doing things it considered not necessary, like growing hair, nails, and sometimes new skin. With all these things the bits you see are usually the dead bits. More recent studies believe that as part of the bodies defence mechanism the thyroid tries to fight the acetones produced by the keytones. And one of the side affects of thyroid problems is hair loss. The thyroid can be supported by iodine which is found in sea kelp. Sorry if this is boring, I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to things like this.

Maybe that's why I have peeling skin then. Somebody else suggested it may be ketosis causing it.

Thank you very much :) That was very interesting xxx
