Having read peoples experiences of hair loss, I was panicking over this as I have a defunct thyroid, so already had hair loss and hair condition issues before adding to them with my wls. Anyway I discussed it with a decent hairdresser who suggested that I had my lovely long hair cut VERY short just before my op as it's easier to disguise any thinner bits. I took her advise and am glad I did. I lost loads to begin with, to the point that I had bald patches at each side at the front and general thinning all over, but unless you knew what you were looking at, the short hairstyle made it less noticeable to other people. I tried all the suggestions that people offer on here and other forums, but nothing worked. Then did a bit of research and discovered that taking extra iron BUT with added vitamin C which is needed to help the body to absorb the ferratin/iron works. I found a Boots own brand iron and vitamin c combination and it works brilliantly for me. Whatever you do, please don't stop washing it as I have known some do. Ask your hairdresser to show you a very simple scalp massage. It's very gentle, but helps to stimulate the blood flow to the scalp and therefore hair growth. Within a couple of weeks of using the iron combo, and the massage whenever I wash my hair, my hair loss had gone from leaving what at times looked like a fur coated shower tray to literally losing the odd one or two hairs. I don't actually lose as much now as I did pre- op. My bald and thin spots grew lovely soft baby hair and the weird thing is that what I lost was mainly my grey patches and as it's all grown back, I now have less grey hair than I had before my op.
I am now 9 months post op and haven't had any significant hair loss for well over 5 months, maybe longer. And I love my short hair, so much that I'm planning on keeping it.
