Heightened Sense of Smell.

I have noticed that my sense of smell seems to be really heightened since my op. I sometimes find smells so over powering even simply opening the fridge. People's perfume or aftershave. Anyone else experienced this? Very curious.

I am noticing some peoples breath is really bad, where I never noticed before.

Yes! I noticed this straight away. I could smell anaesthetic on other patients when I was in hospital, then when I came home everything seemed so overpowering. I thought it was just me....
Very strange!!

Glad it's not just me. Was getting a bit worried LOL

Actually I wonder why this is? Ideas anyone? I shall try to research it.

It will lessen,I had it.could be different senses compensating for our lack of hunger hormone/enzymes.Taste is stronger too.

Quick research says its related to ghrenlin & satiety. Most of us have had our gremlin removed & it is this that signals to the brain I'm hungry or I'm full. Our brain now thinks we are full & the sense of smell is increased hence putting us of eating food. Very little scientific research to date so theory mostly.

Oh I wondered what it is. I'm like a blood hound now. Can smell everything and anyone. I don't like opening the fridge as the different smells of the food inside all mixing together is over powering and if anything smells unpleasant it makes me gag. Funny just how much we are affected by the surgery in so many different ways.

Funny but I find it fascinating & keen to find out why. The mad scientist in me I guess.

Yeh! Exactly how I feel! I have also taken a dislike to particular smells, especially cooked meats which have real yuk factor at the moment. T xxx

I have not noticed much difference with smells because my nose was quite sensitive before, due to allergies, however my daughter always comments on my breath since the op she says it smells of milk she calls me milky breath, charming, I also find that my wee has a strong smell as does the other also the wind when it comes out, i tell them its down to the food being bypassed quickly in my system without being broken down like theirs is. xx Anyone else the same??

I do find my urine smells stronger. Now confused if it does really or just my heightened sense of smell. It doesn't look strong, pale wheaty colour which my doctor always tells me to aim for in case I'm not drinking enough. Can't really ask anyone to identify LOL

Loving this thread...
I noticed my wee smells strong too, but like Bellydancer, I thought it was my nose picking up the smells more. I have just been to the loo, and asked hubby to come and sniff.... He agrees - it is a bit smelly. Mine too is straw coloured, but was lighter pre-op, so maybe I need to up my fluids.
My breath tastes different, but not smelly (according to hubby) and I think my botty wind is a lot less frequent (I was a known farter!) and not as smelly either.
Poor husband's nose has had a rare old workout!!
