Hi i am 8 months into a 2 year WMP in plymouth where you havce to lose 10% for referral for surgery. They told us to expect fluctuations to begin with as you get more active as muscle weighs more, so i am sure your team will know what happening with you at the mo and the weight will soon start to come off :) Sure you reach your target within the time, best of luck!

hi they have NOT mentioned weight loss surgery AT ALL to me i just keep food diary and drink diary gym 2 x a week she said she expected me to loose 2.5 stone in 12 weeks omggggg my bmi is 50.68 and the criteria for walsall is bmi 50 plus so what happens if my bmi falls below??? x

Not really :) You sign on with them and agree to attend for 2 years (although some people do drop out but then they have to wait at least 2 years before they will take a new referral). It's the only way to get NHS funded surgery in this area so you have to join the program. You get access to pyschologists, dieticians, physiotherapists and specialist bariatric nurses. They hold weekly sessions for 10 weeks, then twice a month, then monthly and then 3 monthly over the 2 year program and try and get you to eat better and exercise more.
After 10 weeks you can apply for surgery, you attend a presentation about pros and cons of the different types of surgery and what they entail, then you can ask for a one to one referrial to the specialist. Once he sees you and agrees to refer you for surgery, then your funding is guaranteed but you have to have lost 10% of your starting weight at this point or be well on the way to it.
You stay on the program before, during and after the surgery so you can still use all the above specialist staff for support, help and information, hence the 2 year thing. It just basically means that the NHS resources are funded for 2 years and i can access them for all that time.
trouble is they are a bit "new age" in their approach and don't nag you, weigh you (apart from at the start and then occasionally after but not regularly) and praise you for trying even when you are failing miserably, it's all about small changes!! Unfortunately for the first couple of months, i obviously didn't make big enough "small changes" but i have knuckled down now and really making an effort ;)
Have my one to one at the beginning of May so have to get that 10% off

This sounds like a very good system to me. Wish I had had something like that available to me.

to be fair, it is. You have to help yourself, show you are serious and then they will help you. I think plymouth is one the very few areas offering this in the UK but because of the way the program is run, i think this is why they have good access to funding for bariatric surgery so lets hope it does spread to other areas :)

You will do it. Make the most of all the services available and the advice they can give you.

Tinkerboom sorry for hijacking your thread - as a Walsall patient WM could learn a lot from what they are doing here.

Tinker you stick with it, keep doing what your doing. Can you not ask this question at your appointments? I think WM weight management is very hush hush (they think their M15 or something) as we never hear much about it....

It's a shame you don't make the support group, we had Anna the bariatric nurse there last time, you could have asked your question then...

In the meantime, good on you for hitting the gym twice a week, don't take no prisoners girl :)

As for the other weight management programme, the two year one, it sounds fab. I hope a few more pct's take it up....

Hi tinkerboom, i finished my weight management at the manor last october and i only managed to lose 8lbs in total and they seemed pleased. They have now applied for my funding and i should find out this week whether i have it or not. I'm alot bigger than you chick and they didn't mention the surgery to me either. I think they just want you to focus on all the options they throw at you and if nothing is overly successful then they will apply for your funding as they did with me. Have they done your bloods etc ? have you any co morbities?
