Hello and welcome!

What help and information do you want?

Being a week away from the operation it kinda cuts it fine what you want to find out!

HIa and welcome. Where are you having your bypass, what can we help you with?
You've come to the right place. xxx

Hi Charis
just really wanted to know how long before you start to eat normal food after op
many thanks mo

OK Mo..well every hospital has a slightly different regime.

I was bypassed at Sunderland. For us it's 4 weeks puree food/soup, 4 weeks soft food - scrambled egg, casseroles etc...the moving gently towards more normal....should be 'normal' but obviously MUCH smaller portions by 12-16 weeks.

But just because you should, doesn't mean you will. Everyone is different and some things some people just can't tolerate. For instance at 12 weeks I can't yet cope with bread, toast, or eggs.

But some hospitals like you to do liquids only for a few weeks, then purees, sloppys then moving to more normal textures.

You will need to be guided by your provider. And by your body!

Hi Hipone and welcome to the forum - anything you have to ask on WL surgery will usually be answered as there's always someone who has been through it - So ask away!
Your hospital should provide you with a plan to follow for the first few months but it helps to have done a bit of shopping before the op in preparation.
Everyone gets to solids at their own pace as you will be on fluids for a couple of weeks then as you feel able onto puree ( I kinda skipped that stage) then onto mashed, then soft solids and so on until you are back to eating 'normal' foods so maybe 8 - 12 weeks to work through the stages.
The first few weeks are hard but it gets better esp. as the weight will be dropping off.
I'm 9 weeks out of my op and can eat anything - within reason and in small portions.
Best of luck with your op. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Hi Hipone, :welcome: to WLS, as youve been told we all get told different about when to eat what etc but your dietician should see you either whilst you are in the hospital or before to tell you what they recommend. It usually isnt more than a few weeks though before you can have some "normal" food :D Good luck with your op XX

Hello and welcome <<waves>>! As someone says all hospitals are different, my provider says a month on fluids, a month on puree, then move onto more solid food! Unfortunately i must have misread this as i managed a couple of weeks on soup then went onto incorporating a bit of mash/corned beef/cheese in there. We are all different in what we can manage, it's took me a while to be able to eat eggs again yet i could manage bread at 3 weeks. We're all having the same operations but afterwards can be a very different journey for some... Luckily my bypass has blessed me :) Good luck x

Every good wish Mo for your forthcoming operation... wishing you all the very best.. love and hugs xxx

I also skipped the puree stage but chewed till it was puree (if that makes sense) I could handle drinking soup for the liquids as in my head that WAS proper food as often had soup for lunch etc, but didn't want to eat baby food.

I'm now 8 months out and although I can eat anything, some foods are much easier than others. But as others have said everyone is different, you'll find out as you go along what you can and can't do, just listen to your body, take your vitamins religiously and you won't go far wrong

Jo x
