hi all please please talk to me about the whole experience and how long you waited, want all the details please :)

The Bradford area require a BMI of 50 or over unless u have comorbitities and then I think its 40 or over. Should probably take about 12 ~ 13 months based on my experience xxx

Hi and welcome, ask anything you want, there's nearly always someone who can help or advise.
I'm pretty new to it all myself and everyone has been so kind and welcoming!
I know there's a few people on here from Bradford so hopefully they will be able to give you some idea as to what to expect in that area.
The process varies from area to area.
Good luck
Em xxxx :welcome2:

How wonderful to have a friendly response so soon. My immediate worry is that I won't manage the pre op diet. I hate feeling hungry!

Hi I am new too. I hope my surgery will be end of this year / early next. I attended my seminar June 11, 1st appointment Jan 12 and have another app July 12, which I have to demonstrate weightloss and will go onto the waiting list.... Best of luck!

Hi
Stay strong and meet your targets surgery will be here before you know it then you can really start living i am 7 weeks post ob and have lost 37lbs n loving it, dont worry about the pre-op diet i thought the first day i cant do this but after first day it got easier, good luck on your journey xx

I'm worried about the pre op diet too
But when I think what it's for I hope it will spur me on.
Em xxx

thanks

punkwitch my dietician that is refering me and will be on the team to talk about it all said where i am you have to have a bmi of 40 or 35 with other health related probs. my bmi is just over 43 and i have high blood pressure. not really sure whats going to happen as of now but really not looking forward to the long wait ahead. will be ringing him tomoz to see what will happen from now, but apparently there alot of different steps e.g i got to see someone about my pcos and the dietician once iv been refered and shrinks and also a support group where people have had it done and otheres are waiting like me. Just wanta an answer as to how long this is all going to take, i dont want to be fat anymore ( as none of you do) but im impatient, i just want it all to happen like tomorrow  lol. Punkwitch have you had it done or waiting? xx

Hi I also have PCOS - cant take Metformin anymore as I cant bear the stomach side effects. I am now a pill and use cream to manage facial hair which is working. I hope this op will sort this out - maybe expecting too much!! I did fall pregnant thanks to Metformin thou xx

borogirl its a pain isnt it. well according to my gp hes not giving me metformin as im not trying for a baby, even tho apparently it does help weight loss. and as for the hair, dont even get me started, i spend my life trying to get rid of it :( and the cream doesnt work for me :( but at the moment its the weight that is really really getting to me.
Told my dietician i wanted to do something stupid, e.g start being a coke head again because im desperate, hmmmm hope he doesnt think im a loon just im at my wits end.
I was currently seeing him anyway but i said i want to consider the surgery so now its another million years before they get there backsides into gear, im just going to keep on that i feel ill with my blood pressure and wana die ;) hehe hopefully they will get the hint. Glad to hear that you fell preg, something that gets me down day by day as should have conceived by now in the past but i suppose i have age on my side still :)

Honestly I spent years on metformin. Didn't make much difference to my weight. Used the cream which helped but not enough I still had to use other methods. Now I swear by a decent men's razor. :(

Hi Jessoliver,

I can only offer my personal experience of timescales (in the London) area. My timeline was like this:

-- Jan 2011 ..... referred by GP
-- Feb 2011 ..... received letter from Whittington inviting me to attend Info seminar in June 2011 (some people would have phoned and kept enquiring about cancellations or earlier Info session dates but I did not bother at the time -- I just thought, take it as it comes)

-- June 2011 ..... attended Information / Education session and first Whittington bariatric patient support group

-- Aug 2011 ..... my GP applied for funding
-- Sept 2011 ..... funding approved by Greenwich PCT

-- Sept 2011 ..... first consultant appointment and first tests (bloods etc)

-- Oct 2011 ..... endoscopy test
-- Nov 2011 ..... lung function test
-- Dec 2011 ..... sleep apnoea test
-- Jan 2012 ..... full ECG + heart scan

-- Jan 2012 ..... 2nd consultant appointment
-- Mar 2012 ..... pre-op assessment and start of pre-op diet

-- 17 April 2012 ...... operation date (16 months after referral)

I didn't have to jump any other hoops (dietician or psychologist) based on my recorded eating habits -- therefore only had to go thru the tests that were relevant to my personal circumstances.

FUNDING: BOSPA - The British Obesity Surgery Patient Association
this link will give you an idea what your own local PCT is like regarding funding and whether they follow NICE criteria (BMI above 40 with co-morbidities, or BMI above 50 without).

hi Sharonimo. Got news on friday that i have been accepted for it. so now have to start going through all the things u have just stated. plus maybe trying meds for pcos, which i dont want as there isnt going to be anything good enough for me to lose alot of weight like surgery will. not looking forward to the wait but i suppose i just have to do it like every other person. :(

Hi Jessoliver. Sorry hon, only just seen u asked me some more questions. what will happen now is u will be asked to choose ur provider. if u go to Bradford u will see a member of the bariatric team. they will arrange for u to have a sleep apnea test and see a dietitian so that theh can see which operation will help u most - tho ultimately the decision is urs unless there are medical reasons where they advise otherwise. u wont need to lose any weight to be put on the waiting list. u dont have to attend the support group but it is very helpful to go a few times and ask loads of questions! Everyone at bradford is very nice. I am having my sleeve tomorrow and I got my funding in April 2011. I hope this helps. Chin up love, u have started on the journey to a better, healthier and happier life now and u will get lots of support on here and at the support group xxx

hey hun just read your reply. thank u :) how did the op go? hope all is well with u. can i ask why u didnt opt for a bypass? xxx

Hello I am from Bradford. I am nearly 9 weeks post op. I had a bypass. Best thing I have ever done. I have lost 50lbs in total so far and it has made a huge difference to my life already.

Hope you hear from the PCT soon. That's the most agonising bit. I think once you know you have funding it is a big weight ( no pun intended) off your mind :) from receiving funding to surgery I waited 10 months. Felt like a lifetime though haha.
