Hi there,

I'm 37 and tired of the yo-yo life with my weight. I got down to my lowest weight last year and then hit a brick wall. I'm gaining weight faster than I ever have and have decided to explore surgical WL options. Hitting 15 stones again and 36.5 BMI.

I have savings to pay for the surgery privately and I'm based in Glasgow. I have an existing "relationship" with Ross Hall hospital and have always had excellent care there, but I'm open to looking around Scotland or perhaps abroad (I am more concerned about going abroad though).

I'm wondering how others have come to the conclusion of which option to go with? Sleeve? Gastric Bypass, Gastric Band etc? What items did you factor into your decision making process around the best option and the best hospital? Any advice for me before I take the plunge? I'm highly motivated to do this soon.

Thanks for your time and support in advance,

Lynds

Hey love,

I just recently had the Band at Nuffield in the westend of Glasgow.

I couldn't say enough good things about them and the price was competitive and I'm sure cheaper than Ross hall which I also looked at.

Money was a big factor however I went with the band as it was a lot to do with portion size being my issue! I understood the recovery time was quicker which suited me, although it's not for everyone think just depends on your eating habits.

I would have considered the sleeve but it was another £4000!

So far I have lost 37.5lbs with pre op included..since 14 July 2014!

Good luck with whatever op you decide on, this is a great site and many people with fantastic knowledge xx

Hey MissLynds

I was exactly the same as you - just fed up of trying so hard all the time, only for it to go back on again.

I only had my sleeve op 2 days ago - so currently am experiencing all the pitfalls of Post op surgery. Ie. Wind/pain etc
For me I chose the sleeve because I wanted a permanent option and wasn't so keen on all the fills / de-fills. I know you only tend to hear the bad things that happen sometimes and I read, read and read some more. Only you can make the decision.
You could book a consultation and see what the providers say about your individual circumstances.
Good luck whatever you choose.

Sorry, posted from my phone which makes editing mistakes really tricky.

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for your feedback. Portion size is my problem too. Which surgeon did you use at Nuffield and do you mind me asking what you paid? Tell me to go away if my question is inappropriate!

How do you feel about the band fills/de-fills?

Lynds x

Hey I have wind issues without surgery, so God knows what I'd be like after a sleeve! Thanks for your advice. I am already seeing a Robert Stuart at Ross Hall about an acid reflux issue and I hear he comes highly recommended re: WL surgery, so I can at least talk the options over with him tomorrow. I am in there tomorrow for an endoscope to work out what's going on with my acid levels. I think I'm scared about the permanent move on some of the other procedures, but then see people who come off the band and go for the perm solution. Argh!

Hi! I paid £6250..and that's all aftercare through assure weightloss with Nuffield.

The surgeon was simon gibson who was lovely! So down to earth, made sure I was making right choice, I had physio in hospital to strengthen my core after the op and have a follow up with him on Thursday..this is where I will discuss the fills which are initially booked in for 1 oct but can change depending! I like fact that I can adjust it! Xx

Hi Misslynds.
I had my gastric band surgery done in Belgium 10 days ago by Dr Chris De Bruyne. I will get the fills done nearer home as they come to Britain every week.
Once I had booked he surgery apart from the flights they took care of everything. Hotel for me and a friend, taxis from and to Brussels airport.
The care was excellent and the hospital was so clean and friendly.
Look up Europe Surgery and you will get more information including price.
Still on the 2 weeks fluids but feeling great.
Good luck in your journey.

Susan :)

Thanks Sharon.

Do you notice or see anything on your body for where they inject the fills? xx

Don't worry, I'll be asking the consultant lots of questions, but nice to talk to an actual real person who's gone through it :) x

Wow Susan, thanks. I know I shouldn't feel this way, but I am so nervous about having it down outside the UK. How was it when you arrived in Brussels and when you were getting taken down to theatre? I imagine everyone talking French and me just lying there freaking out! Did they give you any light sedation to calm you down prior to going in? What's the recovery time for you and how are you feeling? You are very brave.

Hi Lynds
I was nervous about being abroad but I know a few people who had been there before and raved about Dr Chris, Frederick and Bart (they visit you at the hotel too).
There was a driver waiting for us at the airport who took us right to the hotel (which was lovely.)
Most of the nursing staff spoke English and before the op there were four of us from the hotel were all put in the same room so we were able to chat.
I wasnt given anything to help with nerves but I was quite calm anyway as we had each other to speak to and my friend had been with me until I was taken to surgery. I do think they would give something though as they were very accomodating.
Two of the girls that were there had only booked it 2 weeks before.
I am feeling great now. Only the scars that are itchy now. Back at work yesterday. :)

hi lyndz I had my surgery nearly a year ago now I had the gastric band. I had lost 4 stone but am now enarly 30 weeks pregnant and have gained back 1 stone. I chose the band as I wanted something reversible and something to mainly control my portions. I didn't like the idea of going as drastic as the sleeve or bypass. I had mine done at a spire hospital and the cost was £4995 with 2 years aftercare. Whatever u decide make sure you get a decent aftercare package. xxx
