Hi Everyone,

I'm Alex. I had a gastric band fitted in Belgium last week (11/1/12) :D as I couldn't afford a private operation here and my PCT won't pay for these operations on the NHS. It was a very scary thing to do but I am now all belted up and raring to go. I do feel fairly alone in the whole process as I get no aftercare, there are things I want to ask and I want to find out if I should be doing anything I'm not. I have been given a diet but it mentions things like low fat curd cheese????!!!! Which I have no idea what it is!

Would love to hear from any one else who's had this surgery and what sort of aftercare (if any) they are getting. To be honest just talking to people in the same situation as me would be lovely!

Thanks Xx

Hi
I had my band fitted in the UK last Thursday 12th so we are at exactly the same point. At the moment I can only have liquids so soup, milk, smoothies etc (nothing with bits). Next Thursday (2 weeks post op) I can go onto soft foods like scrambled eggs, fish pie, mince in small portions. After that small portions of high protein foods. As far as I am aware junk food slides through the band easily like chocolate so beaware! Also lots of water which will help burn the fat!
Anything else just ask!

welcome Alex, there are lots of banders on here so you wont be alone, good luck :) xxx

Hi Amy!

Thanks for your reply. I have been told for the first week I can have Diluted juices, low-fat milk, clear and thickened soups. The plan then says from week 2 to week 4 after surgery to eat pureed vegs, meat/fish with mashed potato. If that is tolerated to try steamed fish, vegs and fruit with side dishes which are soft-boiled such as potatoes or pasta. This seems very different to your plan! Weird! Are there different types of band? The one I've been fitted with has a trademark of Lap-band, they gave me the manual for it - almost like 'if there's a problem refer here'!! Lol!

Hi Suzie, no I don't get any with them. I can book to have one with them in this country but I have been to my doctors this week to ask him if he'll refer me to an NHS consultant to look after me from now on. I have got 4 - 6 weeks to wait to hear from him now, which is just in time for the first adjustment. Just hope he'll take me!

I think there are different types of band but I can't be sure. I have a small band which holds 10ml. I have nothing in it at the moment but I can def feel it. I would not want to eat anything at this stage as I still feel swollen and tender but i know everybody heals at different stages. I would be extremely careful eating anything too solid or you may find it comes straight back up or you get awful pain.
As far as I am aware eating should be slow and you should feel full after a tea plate size portion of food.
How was you experience in Belgium?

Welcome on board. I had my band fitted 13th of october and going for my second fill tomorrow. Fills are important for successful bander as well as healthy crunchy diet. Read through peoples diary you ll see how they get on from stage to stage. But yes you are right first two week clear liquid, the nurse said you can have anything as long as it go through a sieve. Second weeks mushy food and baby food kind of texture, then increasing to mince meat etc... then veg fruit. Any question we are all here in the banders section. Good luck on your journey xxx
