new to this part of the board, originally my surgeaon offered to put me forward for a sleeve. well i went to see him last week, and he said no chance as i have GORD and it has been found to make it worse... BUT he has offered for me to have a bypass instead and i am scared... its a big step, i need to lose weight for my reflux problem, and for myself. i have tried diets but they dont work. i have to wait to have some test on my reflux first and funding but he is happy for it to go ahead, i'm just not sure at all... any advice anyone???

Well I only had my bypass a week today ago, but up to now I am very happy. Sure someone else will be able to assist you more ... good luck with however you move forward xxx :):):)

Hi and welcome, I wanted a bypass and dietician suggested sleeve so am doing my reasearch so can't help much at the moment but there are lots of helpful people here who will advise you.
Don't mean to be thick, and I might be missing the obvious but what's GORD?

gord is basically severe heartburn, i have had previous surgery to correct it but its not succesfull due to my weight, i lost a lot of weight to get it done, but have put it back on :( but now i take meds for depression, i have borderline personality disorder, which doesnt help. i really want to lose weight, but find it so difficult :(

Thanks Tracy. We all find it difficult to loose weight don't beat yourself up. For some of us it's not so easy as "just stop eating rubbish and go on a diet". I have friends who have been 2-3 stones over weight and managed to succesfully loose through WW, slimming world eating healthier etc. I have been with them to the groups but usually stop after 6-8 weeks. Then I get the "don't give up" conversation or "just do this, don't put that in your mouth". It's not that easy! I don't know the answers or why I can't do it (or should I say keep weight off, I have been succesful-ish with some diets and have managed to loose 5stone), but I truly belive for a lot of people it is something psycological(sp) and not just case of making the correct food choice.
I don't understand why WL surgery seems to work, but from reading posts on here it appears to be a final piece of the jigsaw that falls into place or re-wires the brain for many. Is it because you know this is the last option or is it the ultimate tool you needed? I would love to hear others opinions on why surgery works when nothing else has. What is the difference between just dieting and surgery? i wonder if it is because you can't eat something rather than you know you shouldn't eat something.
Sorry Tracy I seem to have hijacked your post ,maybe I should have started a new one, but it was just to say I think most people on here know where you're coming from.

Best thing I ever did.

Can't agree more!
I know I've been very fortunate, no real issues post op, but the minor pros are just that, minor. X

Sent from my Galaxy SII using WLSurgery

I have GORD too, I just take Omeprazole, not had surgery, but my brother has Barretts oesophagus so I didn't want it to get to that stage. I am having the bypass after originally wanting a sleeve, having talked to loads of people who are post op I think this is the right choice for me.
Snooky, I think you should remember that wls is only a tool not a cure. I have read about and seen documentaries about people who have had wls or even multiple wls's and lose lots of weight then eat slider foods and regain. Most people are not cured of the reason they got into this situation, they still have to work at it to get all the weight off and then to maintain.

my worry is that i will get barretts, i already have scarring from the op. I have to have a PHD test again, where they put a tube into your tummy via your nose to check the acid levels. i am scared of side effects from surgery, but i am so fed up of being the fat one, being out of breathe (thought thats partly my asthma) i'm also scared of excess skin after... i guess i'm just scared!!! today i have got up and decided enough is enough with the bad eating habits. i am going shopping and buying no crap. if its not here i cant eat it right? i have prob eating much fruit due to the GORD, so need to find alternative foods
