Hi,

I don't know if I am eligible for surgery in my area. I've tried to find the NICE/PCT guidelines but just can't seem to find them on the internet. I know they are there, I just can't see them.

My BMI is 44, I am not diabetic but borderline, sometimes I have high blood sugar on tests, sometimes not so they tell me to mind my diet. I am in the process of being tested for sleep apneoa (which my mum has) but I don't personally have those type of extra health complaints.

Does family history come in to play when going over your "extra" medical parts to make you qualify? My mum has had a blood clot in her lung and takes warfrin, she has angina, she has high blood pressure as well as a chronic lung disease. My granddad died of a heart attack when he was in his mid 40's, my nan, aunt, uncle and cousin are all type 2 diabetic. Hence the question of would any of this count?

Can anyone point me in the direction of the PCT/NICE guidelines for Sheffiled please as well as answering my question about family health.

Many thanks for reading.

Private medical insurance

Also do any of you guys know if private medical insurance covers this surgery? I've read it does and could look at taking some out if so! lol

Bella, firstly fill in your profile information, sometimes we don't read back through all the posts to see where people are from, surgery type etc we just look at your latest post...

As for private insurance paying, these are usually for our American/Canadian cousins as they don't have the 'LUXURY' of our NHS service.....

You say you don't have apnoea etc but i have to tell you a lot of people don't know they have it before being discovered. Also get your gp to do a fasting blood test to see if you do have type 2 as it runs in the family. This will be the one time in your life you will hope to have a comorbidity like diabetes/apnoea/hypertension etc....

Also as to your pct's guidelines to qualify for wls, ring them direct and ask them. you can google their contact details xx

Hi

The criteria for Sheffield is:

BMI over 50 or 45 – 50 with severe comorbidities.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

You need 50 posts to fill in your profile information.

I am currently being tested for sleep apnoea, they said it was inconclusive, then wrote to my GP saying I missed an appointment (I didn't get a letter) and the letter to the GP said that the tests showed clear indication I did have and the DVLA should be told! I phoned and they said it's a standard letter and I need to go for more tests. Grr make up your mind.

I had diabetes in my pregnancy and was on high levels of insulin but subsequent tests have always been borderline, high one reading, low the next and this is fasting as well as non fasting.

I've finally found something on the BOSPA website on guidelines:

BOSPA - The British Obesity Surgery Patient Association

Looks like over 45 with extra health problems.

I was also just reading somewhere that a woman put weights on her legs and arms and tummy to be weighed at the Dr's to show she was heavier than she was to qualify. Thats really funny the lengths some people will go to and tempting! lol

Just wanted to say hello xx

There's a lot of desperate people out there who will do what it takes to get this life saving surgery....
