How long is the normal waiting time after referal?

I was refered by my gp 7 weeks ago today for gastric banding.
I was just wondering how long the normal waiting time is to hear back to see if i have got funding for banding?
The longer the time goes on the more nervous i am! I suffer from panic attacks and haven't been further than 10 miles from my house in 4 years  I would have to go to Chichester (i've been told anyway) for the appointment (which is 50 miles away)and the not knowing whether i have an appointment is freaking me out! I'd like to know one way or another so i can sych myself up for it.

Sorry to have a ramble, I haven't wanted to worry my partner or parents so haven't said anything to them, so had to ramble somewhere :)

Hi,
It varies so much from area to area. I first went to my G.P in august of last year, got the funding approved a few weeks later, first hospital apointment in december and had my bypass in may this year so about 9 months in total.
Good luck x

I'm in Northamptonshire but got offered Birmingham or Luton for my op. I chose Birmingham x

I am Cornwall & IoS PCT; from July '09 it took me 2 months to get my 1st appointment with the obesity consultant, several other appointments (respiratory, exercise, nutrition) & 2 more visits with the consultant BEFORE funding was applied for in February, then I heard in May I had got the funding. I'm now waiting for pre-op appointment in July!

Hi there, I can't help with waiting times as each hospital differs in procedure. My journey took just under a year from referral to surgery. Hope you hear something soon xx

HI

I am wondering how you all broached the subject of referral for gastric banding with your GP? My GP's not great but i think it's time to do something drastic as i discovered that i am now morbidly obese!

I wondered if you could help me, i got reffered from my gp to walsall manor hospital in December, i then got a letter to say i had got to attend a weight course for 24 weeks did people who have had surgery have to go threw this programme? x

I believe if you live in Walsall you have to go through this to satisfy the PCT. If you are from outdide the borough and funding is automatic then you don't.

Linski is almost correct! People who come under Walsall PCT do have to attend weight management, however those from outside the area do not have to attend... Some of us who are lucky and come from areas that automatically fund don't need to worry about getting funding or weight management, actually Wolverhampton is very very good as all we need to be is obese, comorbidities are not a necessity.....

Hi soontobeyummymummy
sorry I don't know about South Wales at all...maybe you could just go to see your GP and ask him/her what they know? You've got nothing to lose by asking!
